GOP Senator Has Seizure While Running Charity Race in D.C.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina was rushed to a hospital on Wednesday after having a seizure while participating in an annual charity race in Washington, D.C.

Senator Tillis was running in the American Council of Life Capital Challenge race in Anacostia Park, which “benefits the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation,” according to the event website. The race boasts that it “attracts scores of members of Congress, high-ranking political appointees, Generals, Admirals, television correspondents, print and web reporters, Federal Judges and other Washington VIPs.”

A Wednesday article from CNN mentioned that along with Tillis, “several members of Congress planned to run in the annual three-mile road race, including Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Graves, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas.”

The North Carolina politician was “alert when medical responders arrived on the scene,” according to CNN’s report, and was taken to George Washington University Hospital.

Tillis posted a video message to Twitter from his hospital bed, and disclosed that “about two-and-a-half miles in, [I] got overheated.”

A Wednesday report from CNBC noted that the North Carolina senator is “known for his athleticism as an avid mountain biker and participant in obstacle endurance races.”
