Limbaugh on Why Trump Shifting on Immigration Isn’t a Big Deal: His Supporters Don’t Care!

limbaughIt’s hard to overstate Rush Limbaugh‘s influence on the conservative media. So it’s no surprise that Limbaugh’s pithy admission yesterday that he never took Trump seriously on immigration sent shockwaves through the conservative media.

Well, the shock may have been blunted a bit by months and months of the king of conservative radio morphing into the Chief Trump Explainer (Bill O’Reilly may be deserving of the #2 slot here) and prioritizing certain other qualities over conservative principles. Read Mediaite’s own John Ziegler here for more on what Limbaugh has become.

But on his radio show today, Limbaugh followed up on his uncaring attitude by saying, once again, that it doesn’t matter to Trump’s supporters.

Yes, as he spoke to a Trump supporter over the phone, Limbaugh said, “I have tried, and I’m sure you’ve heard this if you are a regular listener, I have tried all last fall to explain to people why people like you and others support Trump and why you are not going to abandon him.”

So, again, Limbaugh didn’t think taking a potential President of the United States seriously on one of his major issues was that important because it wouldn’t have mattered to his supporters.

There’s just one problem here. The Atlanic‘s Conor Friedersdorf today highlighted Limbaugh saying in August 2015 something, well, very different:

We got 16 Republican candidates now, and there’s only one of them—only one—with a unique view or different view on immigration. It’s Trump.

It’s obvious that that issue is the foundational issue for Trump, and I think for Trump to blow this he would have to change immigration. He’d have to backtrack, which he’s not gonna do.

So was that not taking him seriously?
