North Korea Points to Birthday Dog Meme as Example of American Decadence
North Korea is on to the United States’ egregious human rights abuses. At least, that’s according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the state-run news provider that claims to have found the “smoking gun” of evidence for America’s own domestic failings.
Yes, nobody’s perfect, and the U.S. surely has a lot of work to do — what with the ongoing Confederate flag debate, the racially-motivated shooting deaths of nine people in a traditionally Black church in Charleston, S.C., and so on. But when your principle evidence for America’s human rights abuses is Riley the smiling dog, otherwise known as the Birthday Dog meme, then you need to rethink your investigative reporting credentials.
As The Washington Post points out, Riley and other “dogs appear to have been chosen to illustrate the decadence of American society, where dogs are given birthday parties or allowed to grow huge while homeless people line the streets.”
On the one hand, yes — smiling dogs eating birthday treats is a ridiculous contrast from rioting in the streets of Baltimore. Yet this is the reality of modern American life. Then again, North Korea’s probably still pissed all of its threats regarding those activist airdrops of The Interview were ignored.
