Roland Martin Rips Jeff Flake: ‘Not Giving Anybody Props For Giving a Speech and Then Cutting and Running’

Last week, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) announced that he was not going to seek reelection in 2018. He followed that announcement with a fiery anti-Trump Senate floor speech where he said servility to the president was “morally treasonable.”

While the outgoing Republican lawmaker has received plaudits across the political spectrum for calling out Trump, NewsOne host and managing editor Roland Martin was not willing to give Flake credit for slamming the president while simultaneously announcing his exit from Congress.

During a roundtable discussion on ABC’s This Week, Martin stated that despite some folks saying otherwise, the Republican Party isn’t “imploding” as he pointed to how the GOP controls both chambers of Congress, the judiciary, 31 governor seats and the White House.

“Yeah, you have these internal fights, but this is about power,” he said. “This is not about principles, or character, or morals, or values. They want to maintain power. Trump is a vessel that allows them to do so.”

He then took aim at Flake.

“Jeff Flake, that wasn’t courageous what he did,” Martin exclaimed while host George Stephanopoulos added that Flake was going to lose his election. “Courageous is to campaign around Arizona and speak the truth and if I lose that’s fine.”

Martin continued, “I’m not giving anybody props for giving a speech and then cutting and running. No, You stand up and you stay in office and challenge them. That’s how you do it.”
