Sarah Palin Creating A Media Empire, Not A Campaign, Says Howard Kurtz
If you believe Howard Kurtz’s Media Notes column this morning, Sarah Palin has the media right where she wants it. Clamoring for her memoir, taking adventures with her to Alaska and watching every move during hour long sit downs with Glenn Beck overlooking Battery Park.
Kurtz takes it a step further though: could having the media shadowing every Facebook note and press appearance be more important to her than a challenge for the Republican nomincation in 2012? As he wrote:
As an emerging media star, she’s played her cards just right. She makes news with a couple of paragraphs on her Facebook page. Can Tim Pawlenty or Mitt Romney say the same? Of course, the possibility that she may seek the Oval Office — despite resigning as governor after 2 1/2 years — stokes interest in everything Palin does. But when it comes down to raising money, participating in debates and having to be interviewed by the likes of Katie Couric, I don’t think so.
Maybe Howie’s been reading Mediaite for ideas now – this topic of a Palin media empire has been a favorite of Glynnis MacNicol’s for months. As she wrote earlier in March:
It’s hard to argue this woman is not a total natural in front of the camera, and it’s long been rumored that she’s had her eye on some sort of television talk show. What this means for future political plans is unclear: this is either a genius stab at what could feasibly be an early national campaign of sorts — a bit like her Facebook page come to life — that ideally would then segue into an actual one. Or, actually, the only thing that’s ever interested Palin about politics is the platform and the cameras and a reality show would satisfy both…and then some. Who knows. At this point its probably not best to underestimate Sarah Palin.
Is the limelight really above the executive branch? Only time will tell…
