SNL alum Taran Killam did some reflecting today on that infamous episode when Donald Trump hosted.
Killam spoke with NPR’s Sam Sanders and said, “It was rough. It was not enjoyable at the time and something that only grows more embarrassing and shameful, I think, as time goes on.”
He’s uncomfortable with how the hosting gig helped normalize Trump and even says, “There’s nothing good I can take from that week, because he’s not an enjoyable person to be around.”
Killam talked about hearing protesters outside during table reads and how frustrating the process of working with Trump was.
But then he shared a moment when Trump bragged about how fine he’ll be if he didn’t win the presidency:
“The most heartbreaking moment at the time: we’re at the host dinner, and he brings Melania and he brings Ivanka and Jared. And he says, ‘You know, Lorne, if I don’t win this thing, I’m gonna be fine. We just bought this beautiful piece of property in Scotland. If I have to be president, I’m never gonna see that thing.’ And that that was his priority in that moment, that that was even a consideration, made me sad.”
He does acknowledge it’s maybe a little hypocritical for SNL to go from that to being one of the biggest Trump-mocking shows on TV right now.
