Trump’s Legal Counsel Claims Robert Mueller ‘Unlawfully’ Received Transition Team Emails
After Axios released a report today suggesting Robert Mueller had gained access to thousands of emails from the administration’s transition team, a lawyer for President Donald Trump alleged the special counsel got these files illegally.
In a letter penned to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Kory Langhofer — who acts as legal counsel for Trump for America — said authorities “unlawfully produced TFA’s private materials, including privileged communications, to the Special Counsel’s Office.”
Reuters reports the president’s lawyer went on to accuse Mueller’s team, during their process of investigating Trump, of acquiring the emails with knowledge that the files were being wrongfully acquired, while also using “the materials in question, including portions that are susceptible to claims of privilege” despite not informing Trump for America.
Mueller’s team reportedly received the emails from the government agency General Services Administration.
Langhofer also added that these committees should “protect future presidential transitions from having their private records misappropriated by government agencies, particularly in the context of sensitive investigations intersecting with political motives.”
In the Axios report, the outlet stated Mueller had gotten a hold of “many tens of thousands” of emails relating to Trump’s transition team. Communications from the president’s senior advisor Jared Kushner were reportedly caught in the special counsel’s information net as well — which could prove to be important given the beleaguered son-in-law’s knack for making mistakes relating to the Russia investigation.
Additionally, a source told Axios that “Mueller is using the emails to confirm things, and get new leads.”
