MSNBC Analyst Warns Trump Support Stronger Than Critics Think, Predicts Nearly All Republicans Back Him ‘No Matter What They Say’

MSNBC political analyst Matthew Dowd dismissed critics theorizing Nikki Haley voters and other Republicans hesitant to support former President Donald Trump could be “decisive” in November’s general election.

Dowd, former chief strategist for the Bush/Cheney ’04 campaign, joined MSNBC’s Chris Jansing for Super Tuesday and he noted there is “no evidence” to back up theories that Haley voters will somehow sway the election. They all, he predicted, will just vote for Donald Trump.

“I would also add in 2016 there was the same conversation. Oh, a bunch of Republicans are dissatisfied. They’re going to go against Donald Trump. And then in 2020: oh, they’re even more dissatisfied, they’re going to vote against Donald Trump,” Dowd said.

He argued Trump has a track record of retaining more Republican base support than other candidates despite constant talk among his critics about his divisiveness.

“Donald Trump got 94% of Republicans in 2020 in the general election against Joe Biden. That’s more than Ronald Reagan. That’s more than George W. Bush. That’s more than John McCain. That’s more than Mitt Romney. That’s more than any other Republican in the last 30 years,” Dowd said.

The former Republican warned Biden’s campaign they should assume 90-95% of Republicans will ultimately end up supporting Trump — no matter what they claim during primary season.

“I think it’s a fun thing to look at as we look into the primaries, but if I were the Joe Biden campaign, I would pretty much say 90-90% of any Republican, no matter what they say during the primaries, is going to vote for Donald Trump,” he said.
