President Donald Trump sparked the ire of many on Tuesday, including a sitting House Republican, when he claimed Ukraine went “into a war” with Russia.
Trump was asked by a reporter during Tuesday’s marathon Cabinet meeting about the state of his negotiations to end the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“With war, you never know, right? War is very tricky, very horrible. But with war, you never know – things change,” Trump replied, adding:
People go into war, think they’re going to win the war, and then they get their asses kicked and they lose their country. They lose millions of lives. Nobody goes into a war thinking they’re gonna lose. They go in. I’m sure that Ukraine thought they were gonna win. It’s gonna be, you know, we’re gonna win, and you’re gonna beat somebody that’s 15 times your size. Biden shouldn’t have let that happen. Biden shouldn’t have… I mean, the man was grossly incompetent. He should have never been there.
That would have never happened. But you don’t go into a war against somebody that’s 15 times your size.
Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE), a retired Air Force general, shared Trump’s remarks online and added, “It is so insulting. Russia invaded Ukraine and almost took their capital. It was Russia who was over confident and got their ‘asses’ kicked.”
Longtime pro-democracy activist and critic of Vladimir Putin, Garry Kasparov, also replied, “So just surrender? Ukraine ‘went into a war’ when Russia invaded in 2014 and tried to take over the entire country in 2022. Look at the casualty numbers, the strikes on RU energy. Russia is the one getting its ass kicked, which is why Putin is pushing Trump to help him.”
