Maggie Haberman Says Trump Is Using ‘An Enormous Amount of Energy’ Trying to Convince People He’s ‘Fine’

Former President Donald Trump has been expending “enormous” energy trying to show he is “fine” amid his numerous legal problems, according to CNN’s Maggie Haberman.

Trump has repeatedly attacked prosecutors, judges, and even witnesses involved in the cases against him.

The Republican presidential frontrunner is under criminal indictment in four jurisdictions. Two of the criminal cases derive from his attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Another pertains to his retention of government documents upon leaving office. A fourth involves the alleged falsification of business records to conceal hush money payments he made to cover up an extramarital affair. He is also the defendant in a civil fraud trial and a defamation trial.

“What is the former president’s mindset these days?” Anderson Cooper asked Haberman on Friday’s AC360 on CNN. “Obviously his legal problems are mounting. He’s still polling well. Any sense of how confident he is?”

“There is an enormous amount of energy invested in Trump portraying himself as fine and nothing bothering him,” she replied. “And you are seeing that come out in various ways. People who are in contact with him frequently will acknowledge he is very, very angry. He also clearly does not want to be sentenced to prison.”

Despite the legal woes, Haberman said Trump’s inner circle is optimistic about his chances in next year’s general election.

“They are feeling good about his chances in the election,” she continued, before adding that Trump sees winning the presidency as an insurance policy against legal peril. “It is really about winning – and winning in part, Anderson, as a means of dealing with these cases.”
