President Donald Trump ignited a wave of anger on Sunday night when he posted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky can end the Russian invasion of his country “almost immediately.”
Trump posted to Truth Social, “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”
Trump’s post came less than 24 hours before Zelensky and other European leaders are set to meet Trump at the White House to discuss his recent summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which resulted in many critics arguing Trump capitulated to the Russian aggressor by giving up on his calls for a ceasefire and threats of further sanctions.
Trump critics, including many on the right, were quick to put the president on blast for seeming to suggest the fate of the Russian invasion rests in Zelensky’s hands, when Putin is the aggressor.
“In other words: ‘Ukraine can surrender now,’” replied Jonah Goldberg to the post.
Former GOP congressman turned fierce critic Joe Walsh replied, “Trump is a traitor. He’s a traitor to America, he’s a traitor to Ukraine, he’s a traitor to NATO and the free world. And Zelensky is meeting with him today. Zelensky should tell Trump to fuck off. But he won’t. If you’re the praying type, say a prayer today for Ukraine.”
