GOP Congressman: Trump ‘Has Engaged in Impeachable Conduct’

Republican Congressman Justin Amash said President Donald Trump “has engaged in impeachable conduct” in a stunning statement published Saturday.

“Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” Amash wrote in a lengthy Twitter thread that also rebuked Attorney General William Barr.

The Michigan congressman said he “read Mueller’s redacted report carefully and completely” before coming to multiple conclusions: “1. Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented Mueller’s report. 2. President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.”

In particular, Amash heavily criticized Barr’s actions as Department of Justice head, including his release of a four-page summary of the Mueller report.

“In comparing Barr’s principal conclusions, congressional testimony, and other statements to Mueller’s report, it is clear that Barr intended to mislead the public about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s analysis and findings,” Amash said.

“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,” Amash said.

Amash, who was first elected in 2010 as part of the Tea Party wave, has long maintained strong libertarian stances that have often put him at odds with the larger GOP in the House of Representatives.

The congressman also criticized his fellow lawmakers, noting that it appears few other members of Congress have read the Mueller report.

“Few members of Congress even read Mueller’s report; their minds were made up based on partisan affiliation,” he argued. “America’s institutions depend on officials to uphold both the rules and spirit of our constitutional system even when to do so is personally inconvenient or yields a politically unfavorable outcome.”
