Al Green Claps Back After Trump Mentions Him In Rally Speech: ‘If No One Else Will Bring You To Justice, I Will’
The morning after President Donald Trump mentioned Texas Democratic Congressman Al Green at a rally, Rep. Green took to the floor of the House with a blistering response, in which he promised Trump “If no one else will bring you to Justice, I will.”
During his speech in Panama City, Florida Wednesday night, Trump referenced Green without naming him, telling the crowd, of impeachment, that “They think they’re going to win, and if you see the one man, he said ‘It’s the only way we’re going to beat him in 2020,’ to have to do this. The only way.”
What Green actually said, in an appearance on MSNBC this week, was that “I’m concerned that if we don’t impeach this president, he will get re-elected. If we don’t impeach him, he will say he’s been vindicated. He will say the Democrats had an overwhelming majority in the House and didn’t take up impeachment. He will say we have a constitutional duty to do it if it was there and we didn’t. He will say he’s been vindicated.”
During “Morning Hour” speeches om the floor of the House Thursday morning, Green delivered a blistering response to Trump.
“Last night, at a rally in Florida, the president referred to me as ‘that man,’ Green said. “Mr. Speaker, I love my country, and still I rise. And I rise today to address the comment that the president made in referring to me as that man.”
Green said that the video of his remarks on MSNBC “speaks for itself. The president indicates that I said the only way to get him out of office is to impeach him, but the video speaks for itself.”
“But I do want to share with the president that he is right, I am that man,” Green continued. “I’m that man, a liberated Democrat, a liberated Democrat in the spirit of Shirley Chisholm. I’m unbought and unbossed. Mr. President, you finally encountered at least one person that your money can’t buy and your power doesn’t scare.”
Green told Trump that he has “a date with destiny,” and that “You are not above the law. No one is. Impeachment is in the hands of this Congress.”
“Mr. President, I assure you that the long arm of the law is reaching out for you,” Green said. “In this country, we will not allow you, or any other person, to hold yourself out as being above the law. You have an appointment with history in this House of Representatives. If no one else will bring you to justice, I will, Mr. President.”
Green said that Trump’s delay tactics would not succeed, and that “your case will be brought before this House. It’s just a matter of time, Mr. President. It’s just a matter of time.”
Rep. Green was an early adopter when it comes to removing Trump from office, first calling for his impeachment two years ago next week, and was among the first Democrats to introduce articles of impeachment in the House shortly thereafter.
