CNN’s Harry Enten Says Trump’s Alcatraz Talk ‘Speaks’ To ‘One of His Best Issues’ As Voters Feel He’s ‘Far Better’ On Crime Than Biden

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten argued that President Donald Trump talking about reopening Alcatraz makes sense as it “speaks to one of his best issues” — fighting crime.

Enten joined CNN anchor Kate Bolduan on Tuesday to break down polling showing Americans believe Trump is “far better” at handling crime than former President Joe Biden.

“This speaks to one of Trump’s best issues, right? The idea of Alcatraz. You think law and order — you think Donald Trump,” Enten said.

According to an Ipsos survey, Biden scored a net negative 26 points compared to plus-two points for Trump on the question of handling crime.

“So Donald Trump ran, in part, on law and order. It was one of the reasons that he got elected. And at this particular point, Americans like what they’re hearing from him on the issue of crime,” Enten said. “And you see this right here, with a plus two net approval rating — far better than Joe Biden left office with back in 2024.”

The reporter noted that Trump is actually outperforming himself in polling on crime compared to his first term, when he had a negative-13 point rating.

The numbers, Enten argued, give Trump plenty of reason to focus on something like Alcatraz, which Bolduan noted critics have said would be “wildly expensive” to reopen.

“When you hear Donald Trump talking about stuff like Alcatraz — yes, I know it’s late-night fodder for a lot of different folks — but what it actually speaks to is Donald Trump focusing the American people’s attention on an issue in which they actually do like what he’s doing,” he said, adding that concern among both Democrats and Republicans about crime has also dropped from 53% to 47% since Trump took office this year.

Trump announced on Sunday his intention to reopen Alcatraz to “serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE.” The prison closed in 1962.

“When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm. That’s the way it’s supposed to be,” the president wrote.
