Democratic Rep.: Trump’s Silence After Russia Claim That He Accepted Putin Answer ‘Speaks Volumes’
Congressman Eric Swalwell, one of the Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee, spoke to CNN’s Erin Burnett tonight and said that President Trump cannot remain silent in the face of claims from the Russian foreign minister that he accepted Vladimir Putin‘s answer on election interference.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Trump pressed Putin on the subject multiple times, and while the Russian side acknowledged they discussed it too, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made the following claim:
BREAKING: Russian foreign minister says Trump accepted Putin's assurances that Russia didn't meddle in the U.S. election.
— The Associated Press (@AP) July 7, 2017
The White House responded:
NEW: Admin official disputes FM Lavrov's assertion that Trump accepted Putin's assurances that Russia didn't meddle in US election.
— Peter Alexander (@PeterAlexander) July 7, 2017
Senior admin official tells me POTUS did not accept Putin claim of non-interference in last year's election.

Burnett asked Swalwell who he believes. He said, “The ball’s in the president’s court to refute what the foreign minister has said.”
He wants to hear Trump himself refute that claim from Lavrov, but added, “The President’s silence, as far as I’m concerned, tells us everything we need to know.”
And if it wasn’t clear enough, he tweeted this out afterwards:
And his silence so far speaks volumes. https://t.co/OlwtPcOeUL

Swalwell was not the only Democratic legislator to publicly express concern after Lavrov’s claim.
