Hillary Clinton gave a big speech on national security and foreign policy today, and went after some of her Republican rivals for empty tough talk.
She emphasized, “It is not enough to contain ISIS, we ust defeat ISIS.” Clinton said this requires serious leadership but lamented how “our political debate has been anything but serious.”
“Shallow slogans don’t add up to a strategy,” she continued. “Promising to carpet bomb until the desert glows doesn’t make you sound strong, it makes you sound like you’re in over your head.”
That line was not-so-subtly aimed at Ted Cruz, who said days ago of ISIS, “We won’t weaken them. We won’t degrade them. We will utterly destroy them. We will carpet bomb them into oblivion.”
Clinton went on to say that “bluster and bigotry are not credentials for becoming Commander-in-Chief, and it is hard to take seriously senators who talk tough but then hold up key national security nominations.”
