Lindsey Graham on Trump’s Favorability: He Appeals ‘To the Dark Side’
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) joined This Week host George Stephanopoulos on Sunday to discuss, among other things, the massive(ly questionable) appeal of Donald Trump to the GOP’s constituency. After all, Trump revealed Graham’s personal cell phone number during a live television broadcast, resulting in a viral video of Graham destroying said phone. Of course he’d have something to say about Trump.
When Stephanopoulos asked Graham about “the nature of Donald Trump’s appeal,” Graham launched into it — albeit without calling the Donald a “jackass” this time:
“He’s appealing to the dark side of American politics. He is not offering solutions to hard, complicated problems. He is basically selling fear and prejudice.”
Stephanopoulos then pushed Graham further, asking “why’s he doing so well?”
“There’s a market in both parties, if you say outrageous things. There’s a market in my party for people. If you say that Obama‘s not born in America, that he’s actually born in Kenya, there are people who want to believe that. If you say most illegal immigrants are drug dealers and rapists, there are people that want to believe that.”
All criticism aside, Graham did point out that Trump helped him get a new phone, which was something his staff hadn’t been able to do before. So at least there’s that.
