As Bill Maher started his panel by addressing Hurricane Irma tonight, he immediately brought up climate change and clashed with HLN’s S.E. Cupp.
Maher began by mocking Republicans for saying it’s “not the time” to talk about guns after a shooting and “not the time” to talk about climate after a hurricane.
“I’m sorry, this is the time to talk about climate,” Maher declared.
Cupp responded by immediately saying she believed in climate change, but using the word “denier” is “a bit loaded.”
“I think you have to be allowed to ask questions, the basis of scientific inquiry — asking questions about stuff.” she said. “And so to say that ‘I don’t know if hurricanes are caused by climate change’- every scientist I read this week said they don’t cause them but they’re probably making them more intense. We just don’t actually know yet. I think it’s okay to say that.”
She added that although she believes that climate change has human causes, she still want “the right to ask questions.”
“What question?” Maher asked. “What question is still out there?”
Cupp questioned what part of the “human roots” of climate change are responsible for creating such powerful storms, something she says all the scientists she read this week didn’t have the answer to.
“That’s not right,” Maher reacted.
The HLN host pushed back.
“When you say ‘That’s not true,’ you are only emboldening irresponsible blowhards like Rush Limbaugh!” she exclaimed. “You don’t want to do that!”
Maher responded by saying he doesn’t want to live his life by what he “might make Rush Limbaugh get mad at,” but Cupp doubled down by saying he doesn’t want Limbaugh’s “20 million listeners to believe him more easily because you’re over here saying you’re not allowed to think.”
“Those listeners are lost,” Maher shot back. “I’m working on Ken Bone.”
