Tucker Carlson Warns Trump Era Similar to Venezuela: When Voters Are Ignored They Get ‘Reckless’ and Turn to Populists
Fox News’ Tucker Carlson delivered an ominous warning on discord among the American voters Thursday, predicting a societal collapse mirroring that of Venezuela.
The Fox Newser speculated during an interview with the network’s Neil Cavuto, who was discussing Carlson’s new book, Ship of Fools.
In the book, Carlson cautions that voters become “vengeful and reckless” and vote for populists like Donald Trump when faced with a government that isn’t providing what it wants.
“Look what happened in Venezuela,” he told Cavuto. “People looked up one day and they’re like, ‘Wait a second, nine families control the whole economy but we still have the vote, and to punish them, we’re going to elect this guy, Hugo Chávez, and then Nicolás Maduro.'”
Comparisons to Venezuela have been a common theme in the GOP’s criticism of the left, as some conservatives routinely describe the country’s unraveling when seeking to make a case against progressive policies and socialism.
Carlson concluded his interview by contending that leaders would have to fall in line with the requests of voters if they wish to maintain peace and avoid populism.
“Populism is when you get when you ignore what voters want,” he said. “They punish you with it, so if you want to stop the volatility, and I do, you need to respond to what they actually want. If they say, ‘We kind of want our borders under control,’ you better do it.'”
