‘When Did You Stop Beating Your Spouse?’ NatSec Advisor Jake Sullivan Accuses Peter Doocy of Asking Loaded Question

National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan did not take kindly to a question from Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy on Monday.

Doocy cited a report from NBC News, which said that in a private meeting with allies in January, President Joe Biden reacted angrily when told his poll numbers in Georgia and Michigan had dropped due to his unrelenting support of Israel during its war with Hamas-controlled Gaza.

“He began to shout and swear, a lawmaker familiar with the meeting said,” the report stated. In response, a White House spokesperson told NBC News that Biden makes foreign policy decisions based on national security concerns, not poll numbers.

During Monday’s White House press briefing, Doocy asked Sullivan about the meeting and whether Biden was swearing about poll numbers, Hamas, or Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:

DOOCY: A report that, when President Biden was told his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas was starting to affect his poll numbers, the quote is, “He began to shout and swear.” So, when he does that, is he shouting and swearing about Netanyahu or about Hamas, or about his poll numbers?

SULLIVAN: This is the “When did you stop beating your spouse?” question because I don’t think he ever did that.

DOOCY: Excuse me?

SULLIVAN: Well, you used that as the premise of your question, which is, “When he does that…?” I’ve never seen him do that – shout or swear in response to that. So, from my perspective, that particular report is not correct.

The question, “When did you stop beating your spouse?” is typically invoked to critique what the speaker believes is a loaded question.

Biden has faced mounting criticism from many in the Democratic base for continuing to support Israel even after its military has killed more than 30,000 Palestinians in response to the Oct. 7 terror attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis. In the Democratic primary in Michigan, which has a sizable Arab American population, more than 100,000 voters chose “Uncommitted” rather than Biden.
