Congrats? Glenn Beck Named Media Matters’ “Misinformer Of The Year”

video

glenn-beck-bookWell, this is a surprise! In the yearend rush of 2009-themed lists, Media Matters has given Glenn Beck the dubious distinction of “Misinformer of the Year.”

In a 4000+ word post (!), the liberal media watchdog group criticized Beck for, among other things, “embrac[ing] violent, anti-government rhetoric,” comparing President Barack Obama to a communist, and “rejoic[ing] after America loses bid to host 2016 Olympics.”

From Media Matters:

“When he wasn’t calling the president a racist, portraying progressive leaders as vampires who can only be stopped by “driv[ing] a stake through the heart of the bloodsuckers,” or pushing the legitimacy of seceding from the country, Beck obsessively compared Democrats in Washington to Nazis and fascists and “the early days of Adolf Hitler.” He wondered, “Is this where we’re headed,” while showing images of Hitler, Stalin, and Lenin; decoded the secret language of Marxists; and compared the government to “heroin pushers” who were “using smiley-faced fascism to grow the nanny state.”

Like his predecessor [2008 Media Matters Misinformer of the Year Sean Hannity], Beck spat on scruples, frequently announcing his goal to get administration officials fired. He increasingly acted not as a media figure, but as the head of a political movement, while helping to bring fringe conspiracies of a one-world government into the national discourse.

And he all too frequently helped to set the mainstream media’s agenda.”

For what it’s worth: past Misinformer of the Year recipients include Sean Hannity (2008), ABC (2006), Chris Matthews (2005), and Bill O’Reilly (2004).

In commemoration of the award, Media Matters also put together this montage of Beck clips. Judge for yourself:

A well deserved dishonor for Glenn Beck.

  • Fidoohki

Is being awarded the equivalent of ‘Liar of the Year’ by a group proven to play loosely
with the facts laughable or pathetic? You make the call!:)

  • personwhomakescomments

I hear “Imnotblue” waddling in here, ready to tell Robert Q. how he’s making a big deal about this, and how Media Matters should go eff itself….wah, wah, wahhhhhh

  • LNSmithee

A dishonor from Media Matters is something to be proud of. I hope for Glenn’s sake there’s a trophy involved.

  • rmbltmbl

They’ll always tell you who they are most afraid of.

    Uh-oh… looks like I’m under someone’s skin. Sorry buddy… but you’re wrong.

This story has relevance to media… as Beck is a big-time personality, and (for reasons unknown) many in the media think Media Matters is a legitimate site (instead of a liberal advocacy website, which isn’t about distorting the truth to smear political opponents). Actually, I think this says more about the lunacy of MM, rather than Beck… but perhaps that’s just my POV.

Anyway… as Quigley said, “Well, this is a surprise!” Beck became huge this year, so it’s no surprise that MM (and the others on the left) are singling him out for perceived “misinformation.” Once you start doing reports on your television program, that result in the dismissal of a White House cabinet member… you know the ruling party is going to come after you. If I were Beck, I’d see this as a badge of honor.

Really, I’d be more worried over who Media Matters like, rather than whom they don’t.

  • TfT

WOW for Beck — this has got to be WAY better than being named WPITW so many times!! Congrats to Beck.

  • ChrisNH

If Obama’s water-carriers in the media are going to exhaust themselves with 4,000-word opinion pieces, all I can say is ‘Bravo to Beck!’ Keep it rolling, man. If they had limp wrists and thin skin in 2009, I can only imagine the fun we’ll have with Obama’s little cabal in 2010.

  • hkyplayer

Did you really think Media Matters would put someone they worship up for this award. Come on, they went after the one they are most afraid of.

Prove MM has ever been incorrect as you claim. …and not with the rantings of some right wing site.

Glenn Beck is nothing but an azz-clown. You’d have to have a very low IQ to not see what a total nutjob this guy is.

Glenn Beck vs Glenn Beck on the awesomeness of Health Care:

“”US healthcare debate: Glenn Beck v Glenn BeckThe Daily Show reveals Glenn Beck’s flip-flop on the need for healthcare reform in America:

Beck’s argument is essentially: “Don’t fix it if it’s already awesome.” But Beck’s opposition to reform runs counter to a personal story about problems with US healthcare highlighted by none other than … Glenn Beck.

The Daily Show played clips of Beck complaining about the US health system after he had an operation in 2008. Beck said his surgery was an “eye-opening experience” and aired a segment about his “personal voyage through the nightmare that is our healthcare system”.”"”

In other words, “Even if you show me evidence (and there’s so much, where to begin?), I’ll say it doesn’t count because of the source.” Is that correct? Any bit of evidence will get tossed because the site/person exposing it will be too “right wing” to be telling the truth. Yeah… we’ve played this game before.

As for Beck… why does everything have to be so black and white? Can’t you think that the healthcare system is good, but could be better… but the current plan is no good? Can’t you want to improve things, without supporting a government takeover? Yeesh… talk about missing the point.

  • disgusted

AND he always is ahead of the wwh (wite wash haus!) AND its “gang”!

  • Fidoohki

    How’s this BJL411?

    http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/body_armor_claim_still_false_and_nasty.html

Essentially? No. His argument was ‘ while it isn’t perfect what the Democrats want would
make it far worse and is possibly unconstitutional’. Now I know you may find this hard to accept
but it is possible to ‘have the greatest health care in the world’ and still have it be in need of
    fixing.

I happened to tune into a Beck rerun over the weekend. He was interviewing the singer, Andy Williams. There was a song, some Holiday song, it was Becks favorite. He started crying. Weeping. Blubbering. He could barely get the words out. Classic Beck. I’m sure his target audience was crying at home with him. Those of us who think he is the greatest bullshit artist of our time, however, were laughing like crazy.

  • Jim R

Kudos to Media Matters, excellent work as usual.

All of their work is backed up by facts that they provide links to, for anyone caring to do more than lazily smear yet another entity with the temerity to challenge bought and paid for conservative talking points. The constant railing against them by the right wing talkers is indicative of who really fears whom.

Thanks, Mediaite, this is the kind of story that needs more exposure all the time, given the relentless drum beating cacophony from the right the last forty years that inflames and dumbs down by design.

  • m

Glenn Beck is a well-deserved winner of this award.

  • Ted

Bullshitter of the year is really more appropriate. Beck has a special talent for exploiting the dumb ass teabagging crowd and laughing all the way to the bank.

  • http://www.nukethefridge.com MartiniShark

They have undermined their own contention right off the bat, stating that Beck embraces “violent rhetoric”. If they claim to listen to him then they have to ignore his regular entreaties to his listeners to be peaceful in their protests or else it will cancel out their message. But MM has never been overly concerned with being accurate if it takes them off point.

Do you feel the same way about… oh, I don’t know… MM constant railing against Beck? Is that also indicative of “who really fears whom?”

    Really… how easy was that?

  • http://www.nukethefridge.com MartiniShark

Beck is a B.S. artist and all his followers are a group of uneducated dolts who end up making him rich, however we have to believe that MM is a completely objective non-partisan site and anyone who reads them is a well-educated deep-thinker, right?

Ever wonder why they never rail against liberal extremism? Ever wonder why they never criticise those who foment violence on the left? Ever wonder why you hate Beck becoming finacially successful while MM is financed by a multi-billionaire who bragged he made even more billions in the past year during this malignant economy? Didn’t think so.

Media Matters is nothing but a bunch of lying scumbags, to me. They have ZERO credibility!

    ONE SMALL EXAMPLE:
Fox, Drudge falsely assert Dodd put “bonus protections” into stimulus bill
    http://mediamatters.org/research/200903170026
Fox’s Hannity, Doocy repeated falsehood that Dodd to blame for AIG bonuses
    http://mediamatters.org/research/200903180019

BREAKING: I was responsible for bonus loophole, says Dodd

  • roxsteady

It’s because the Liberals don’t go on the air a lie 24/7. Deal with it. Beck is a joke and everyone knows it except the idiots who watch that junk. Admit it. How many times a day are the righties smacked down by people who are well informed? Stupid asses!

  • roxsteady

The only people Beck scares are big named advertisers. Which is why he doesn’t have any! Every wonder about that?

  • roxsteady

There is no perceived misinformation. This idiot said that Progressives and Liberals were pushing this whole “Separation of Church and State” nonsense. Doesn’t this moron know that it’s in the Constitution? This is just one example of his stupidity and misinformation. This is why we Liberals think that Republicans, and their teabagger supporters are stupid. We have proof thanks to Media Matter and many others. We like to call them FACTS!

I agree… nobody’s on the air 24/7. But if you really believe that somehow the leftwing talkers are less likely to “bend the truth” (or lie) than rightwing talkers… then you’re probably not watching either. Keith, Rachel, and the rest have all been caught “taking liberties.” It’s just that Beck has a bigger audience, so of course more people notice when he opens his mouth. If MSNBC ever gets on par (or closer) to FNC’s numbers, I’m sure more people will pay attention to their distortions.

Didn’t wonder, because it’s not true. Please try again… perhaps in ONE post, not three.

I always love when you get into these arguments… with yourself. Post, just minutes after another post, after another post… without any responses in the middle. Yeesh.

Anyway, MM is known for taking things out of context and spinning those so called “facts” to fit their agenda. They’re an advocacy group, who makes money and exists on “exposing” rightwing comments… so logically, they need to keep finding them, or they’ll have nothing to talk about. The problem is, they’re required to keep up the pace, and that sometimes means fudging the facts, editing the video, or changing the context to fit their spin.

I know you don’t want to believe it… and no matter how many examples I could show you, you’ll always find a reason not to believe. But that’s what makes YOU an ideologue… not a serious commentator. Beck could start giving away cash to the homeless, and MM would find something wrong with it…and you’d agree. Haters always hate… the “facts” have no value.

  • Fidoohki

The trouble with Hate is that it is bipartisain…:(

  • Fidoohki

I listen to Mr. Becks arguments but I listen to his opponents arguments as well. You know what most of
    those are?

    BECK IS NUTS!
    BECK IS A RACIST!
    BECK IS A HATEMONGER!

That’s it. As someone, wrongfully in my opinion, accused me of using in another thread, these are
not arguments, they are AD Homenims. Look it up.

That is why Beck is as popular as he is, the left can’t fight him on issues.

    1.

    @Roxsteady
“This idiot said that Progressives and Liberals were pushing this whole “Separation of Church and State” nonsense. Doesn’t this moron know that it’s in the Constitution? ”

No, that “idiot” does not know, because it is not in the Constitution. Any of the articles involving church and the government were established for the protection of the church FROM the government, and the statement which prevents the state from establishing a religion was to prevent the individual from being coerced into how they practice their faith. Thomas Jefferson, who was himself an agnostic, fought the hardest to preserve the church and stated it was important that our government adhere to its religious principles, never that they should be seperated. Stupid asses, indeed.

    – “We like to call them FACTS!”

Call them what you like, that doesn’t make them true.

  • Ted

The hate for MM is palpable from otherwise peace loving teabaggers!! Hate, hate, hate…oy!! Okay teabaggers, where exactly did MM get it wrong about Beck?

  • Kevin

“”We have proof thanks to Media Matter and many others.”"

Yes, Media Matters is so honest, high integrity and would never bend the truth. Ha. I have an account with MM and my posts are reviewed prior to posting. If they don’t like what I have to say, they don’t post it. That speaks volumes for their honesty, integrity and openness to countering opinions!!!! They are funded by left-wing nuts. If they stuck to the truth, they wouldn’t get paid. Is that so hard to understand?

  • J Baustian

Has Media Matters ever issued a correction? If so, when do they have time to come up with new inventions?

  • pyrope

Mr. Glenn Beck is possibly the most impassioned individual in all of media who is simultaneously sane. It is clear that he loves the United States and all the good things it stands for. Mr. Beck is the one prime example I can think of who has illustrated to others the full meaning of the “American Dream.” Most of you were fortunate enough to have been born in this great land and thus many of you have no idea of just how blessed (or, if you prefer, fortunate) you are. In siding with those who want to drag this country into any of the great perversions that are socialism or facism (that is, anti-capitalism), you think with your nether regions rather than your brains. Observe nature and you will see the course you must take if you are to survive. It is unfortunate that even those who may agree with me are simply too stupid to understand just how much you have at risk by worshipping your liberal gods.
