Damage Control: Obama Makes ‘Audio’ Statement On Northwest Terror Incident

obama_audio_statementThere appears to be growing consensus that President Obama’s reaction to the failed terrorist attack on Flight 253 was, at best, tardy. While some have pointed out that his response was one of a calm and collected leader, the somewhat bungled message by Janet Napolitano has lead some to question her viability to remain as Secretary of DHS. Today, Obama made an audio statement, which surely set the cable news producers in overdrive to scramble for tonight’s shows.

As we’ve mentioned before, it is odd that an administration that is normally obsessed with public perception should make a series of whiffs with their first big terrorist scare. To wit, Obama’s vacation destination not only lends itself to a sense of being disconnected, but the Waikiki backdrops behind White House reporters only further that impression.

Then, yesterday, word broke of a siren-led motorcade, speeding from the presidential round of golf (which was cut short) to attend to a injured family friend. You could almost hear half of America cracking to themselves: “where was that urgency during the terrorist scare?”

While the text of Obama’s statements were at once reassuring and predictable, it mostly felt like damage control. Which, in all likelihood, is how it will be received by most in the media.

Not his first terrorist scare — lets not forget the 14 people killed at Ft. Hood wherein he also didn’t do so good in his remarks…shout outs and all.

Out of curiosity — has Obama ever issued just an audio statement before? This man loves the camera so it surprised me when he only issued an audio statement.

The Teleprompter had an early tee time out at the course and wasn’t changing it’s plans.

Teleprompters need a little R&R too.

what the f-ck is an audio statement worth? what is going on in w/ his people to think this is the logical next step? is the president in a goddamn cave?

  • TfT

Apparently, the video was released a hour plus after the audio statement.

puck and TfT – very nice Limbaugh suck up.

Frankly, I’m shaken to to core over this little incident and it would have been comforting had the President come out earlier and given me, all of us actually, a metaphorical hug. Because some of us – mostly teabaggers, were shitting their pants. You can all go home, we’re safe…thank God.

I’m so tired of this clown talking about “violent extremists” instead of calling them what they are — terrorists. Obama is so damn P.C. about everything it makes me want to vomit. He really missed his calling in life. He’s been a terrible president for this country, but he would have made a fine European leader.

What a bunch of dumbasses. Read some real news for a change and stop listening to the garbage that is fox news and other stupid Republicans who are concerned with what someone is called and not what they did and how that fits into our justice system. Even that idiot Karl Rove jumps in with more of the stupid.

From Dave Neiwert at Crooks and Liars:

“On Hannity, he claimed that by filing criminal charges, “we treat him as a guy who tried to knock over a Seven-Eleven or got caught shoplifting.”

Memo to Karl: Convenience-store robbers and shoplifters do not get charged with terrorism in federal court. Just sayin’.

Moreover, the problem with Rove’s claim that “this shows the difference” between the Bush and Obama administrations is flatly false (aka a lie).

Faced with nearly identical circumstances with would-be shoe bomber Richard Reid — who was attempting to use the exact same kind of explosive on an American flight — the Bush administration in 2001 did exactly the same thing: it filed criminal charges and eventually tried Reid in federal court.

What’s worth noting is that Reid, too, was potentially an intelligence bonanza, since he had numerous operational ties with Khalid Sheikh Muhammad.

Then there was Zacarias Moussaoui, a French citizen who was eventually convicted of plotting with Al Qaeda to participate in the 9/11 attacks. He, too, was treated as a federal criminal by the Bush administration.

Finally, it should be noted that declaring suspects “enemy combatants” — especially when they are captured away from the field of battle — is actually a legal minefield fraught with far greater uncertainty than the use of federal criminal statutes. The classic example of this was the case of Jose Padilla, who was declared an “enemy combatant” by the Bush administration and whose case wound up taking years to be settled by the Supreme Court — which eventually insisted that he be tried in federal court. Padilla’s case was somewhat different, since he is a U.S. citizen, but one can rest assured that the issue of habeas corpus central to his case would be resurrected should Obama have followed Rove’s advice.
But then, anyone who follows Karl Rove’s advice deserves everything that inevitably will happen to them.”

I couldn’t agree with him more. Just a bunch of uninformed, ignorant, sore losers. We get it. You hate this President but, he kicked your sides ass. Get over it!

  • Ted

Chris – you’ve obviously put a lot of thought into your post. Frankly, it’s difficult to argue with that kind of logic…such as it is. Keep fighting the good fight!!

  • roxsteady

By the way, never forget who was “in charge” on 911. As much as Republicans would like to try and spin this as the worst attack on American soil, we all know damn well who’s watch that actually happened on! The fact is that they didn’t keep us safe in their 8 years in office. Never forget that!

  • TfT

And now we are learning that the CIA was indeed tracking this terrorist, and still he got on board that flight. Is the CIA running scared, afraid to jump the gun too soon, because the Obama administration is conducting a criminal investigation of CIA agents who kept us safe during the Bush years? It’s a question that was asked on MSNBC, of all places!!! But it is a good and fair question. Have the policies implemented by Obama (no more terrorists, man caused disasters, criminal investigations of CIA agents, court marshalls for Navy SEALs, etc.) made our guys too trepidatious? Fair questions.

Here’s more for idiots who either can’t read or can’t dispute these facts. From Bob Cesca’s Blog:

“The Bush administration, while workers were still digging through the rubble at ground zero, waited nine days to say anything about the failed Shoe Bomber attack. And when they finally responded, it went like this:

“The White House has been monitoring the situation since early on today,” McClellan said, according to a Washington Post article published on December 23. The lead statement came from Swift, who lauded the “heroic acts” of “the flight attendants and passengers who helped subdue the suspect.”
Little changed in the days ahead. The Washington Post, citing administration sources, also reported on Sunday December 23 that Bush would seek an increase in domestic security funds as the centerpiece of his 2003 budget request. On Monday December 24, CNN reported that Bush called members of the U.S. military stationed overseas to pass along holiday wishes. He was joined at Camp David that day by “the extended Bush clan… including the President’s parents, the former President and the First Lady.”

Compare that with the Obama administration. “Human and systemic failure,” the president said today.

Oh, and by the way the Bushies didn’t say a damn thing about the Beltway Snipers either.

And one more thing, Pat Buchanan, the Shoe Bomber is currently rotting in an American prison after being prosecuted in an American courtroom.”

Again, we get it. You hate this President but, if you don’t get your facts straight you end up looking like just another stupid teabagger who doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

I only have one question – at what point did Holland become a state? I was under the impression that it is a sovereign nation. Yet, we keep pointing at our security, when it is the Dutch security system that failed. The US does not run Amsterdam airport security, nor does it run Nigerian airport security.

And the Dutch problem is simple – they have a policy of not angering Moslems.

To keep pointing at US agencies when the problem is a Dutch security issue is just dumb. Perhaps if Obama had said something about the need for the Dutch to get it together, it would have made sense.

Irony note – the full body scanners that the media (including Fox) were opposed to and now favor were first used in Amsterdam – the very place this terrorist boarded Flight 253. Anyone asking what the hell the Dutch were thinking? Nope – just more of the same tired extreme rhetoric from both sides.

@TfT – CIA tracks a lot of people. Just being tracked is not adequate reason to deny someone access. Context does count.

@roxsteady – Rove is a compulsive liar looking to exonerate himself. He will say literally anything to sound like he is right. On the other hand, blaming Bush for 9/11 is wrong. Yes, it was on his watch and yes, there is lots of after the fact finger pointing, but when all is said and done, the ONLY people to blame are those that attacked us.

    Oh, TfT.
Always nice to see how little you really know.
Ever remember “audio” statements made by President Bush when he was at the ranch in Crawford?
There isn’t a satellite uplink at every corner.
You get the audio first, and the videotape follows.
Somehow, you seem to think the CIA rules the world and can instantly prevent someone from boarding an aircraft.
Quite a fantasy world you and your Dick (Cheney) live in.
    The CIA kept us safe?
Tell that to the families of the 2,973 victims.
    Fair questions?

This is where I fault the Obama administration – they let the moron sector, the Pete Hoekstras and the Peter Kings take the story and run with it. King and Hoekstra should be slapped down and made fun of along with the jockstrap jihadist. Don’t let those whiners revive the fear factor in political marketing. Anyone remember the Don Corleone/Johnny Fontaine scene where the Don tells Johnny ‘act like a man?’ Someone needs to grab Hoekstra and his buddy, Peter King, and tell them to “act like a man”Corleone style. Instead they are pussies.

stupid mediaite for not pointiong out it took Bush 6 days to respond to the shoe bomber incident. making it look like its the 1st time something like this is happening. Shallow, dumb, and short-term memory

MAN am I glad this happened!!1 Sure the SOCIOFASCIST regime of the Obamessiah gives me plenty to be ANGRY about all the time, but I was missing the YIN to anger’s YANG when it comes to being a True American Patriot: FEAR!!1 Now thanks to Great Americans like Peter King and the people at FOX NEWS The Most Powerful Name in News, my yuletide calm has been SHATTERED by pictures of SCARY BLACK PEOPLE and tales of the Obamessiah literally HANDING THE KEYS of our country over to his MUSLIN friends!!1 Now I am ANGRY AND AFRAID all over again — truly a CHRISTmas miracle!!1

    Ted says:

Ted is the perfect example of the over-politicization of terrorism. He believes, very strongly, that terrorism “isn’t a big deal,” and that we should be concerned about people who have stated goals of attacking this country. Why does he think that? Well, it’s simple… the Republicans have made addressing this issue their platform, and more people associate anti-terrorism measures with the right… therefore, Ted must be against it. It’s not philosophically wrong, rather it’s politically wrong, because it’s not “his guys.”

This is a real problem. Terrorism should be an “all of us” thing, not a right/left thing… and our petty squabbles are going to get people killed.

I’m confused… what’s today? Oh yeah… it’s 2009… almost 2010. And who’s the President again? Obama? Then why are you ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT GEORGE BUSH?!

My God, man… get a grip and move on!
