Fox News’ Bret Baier Responds To NAACP ‘Snookering’ Accusation: ‘We Didn’t Even Do The Story’

video

After being accused by NAACP President Ben Jealous of “snookering” the organization into condemning USDA official Shirley Sherrod for some allegedly racist comments she made at an NAACP event, Fox News’ Bret Baier has responded to the accusation somewhat perplexed about it, as “Fox News didn’t even do the story.”

Jealous accused Fox News and Andrew Breitbart, who initially released the Sherrod tape, of “snookering” them and, eventually, costing her her job. Not commenting on Breitbart’s role, Baier pointed out that the story did not even get airtime on Fox News– “Fox News didn’t even do the story. We didn’t do it on Special Report. We posted it online. It’s an amazing turn of events.”

It is possible that the NAACP responded against Fox News based on statements from Sherrod herself, as she claimed that she was pushed to send in her resignation because of a video released on Big Government, and because “you’re going to be on Glenn Beck tonight” (she was, just not that night, and he didn’t attack her). Fox News did not cover the story during their news hours before Sherrod’s resignation.

The Special Report panel also joked about it, with Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer concluding, “I always suspected that Fox News was the root of all evil, and now I know it’s true” but ultimately taking Sherrod’s side on the matter and Contributor Juan Williams adding that the was the situation was handled could have been better.

In the Beck clip that Glynnis posted, he says that the tape aired on both Hannity and O’Reilly.

Now, I didn’t watch either of their shows and I don’t know how their timing relates to the NAACP’s initial statement, plus I guess maybe you could put them behind that “opinion wall”, but the story must have run at some time on Fox News or Beck’s intro was wrong.

I love it! Holder: “We are a nation of cowards on race.” Pal, you ,Barry, the NBPP , the NAACP and libs have been playing the race card before and since Barry got elected, and now, you all look like fools!

Breitbart just showed the video- It was not Breitbart nor FOX that fired the woman- it was you race card players who thought your race game had gotten out of control and that you now had to act before getting all the facts.

Sherrod on CNN said that it was the BHO admin and the NAACP who were responsible for her resignation. She said that she was told that the WH feared the video would show up on the Glenn Beck show- so what libs- you have already told us nobody watches FOX- right King??

She said no one would give her a chance to give her side ( sound familiar?).

Ahhhhhh, “hoisted withe their own petard” has never been more apt!

I count 13 stories on the Mediaite home page related the Sherrod incident.
There are two related to the Journolist scandal, and those accuse the DC Caller of being complicit in the scandal (I know, that logic escapes me to).

As we have always known, Mediaite has a profound leftwing slant. If Mediaite’s goal was to become part of the mainstream media, I would say they achieved that goal today.

Unlike the President, the NAACP and most politicians I wait to get the FULL story.

You will notice that I did not attack the woman in the video. I always wait until I know the FULL story. Oh by the way so does Beck.
Did Obama get the FULL story when he attacked the Boston police?

RRK never gets the story right even when he has the FULL story. He just attacks any statement made by Beck or Palin.

Not one rightwinger here dares to comment on the actual content of the edited video. A March speech in front of a mixed crowd referencing a 1986 event outside of the federal government in which Sherrod actually helped someone who was racist towards her. Instead, you take Baier’s word for it that Fox News wasn’t involved, despite Hannity not only playing the video, but helpfully “interpreting” what she was saying during inaudible portions.

What a shameless bunch of morally bankrupt losers the right is. As with the ACORN, the New Black Panther issue, and now this, all you have is outrage over doctored audio and video clips. The sad part is that the corporatist media are such pansies, afraid that they are going to get accused of “liberal bias” and disinvited from the next McCain barbecue/butt-licking.

No, she wasn’t on Glenn’s show. She was referring to Monday night’s show. Glenn didn’t touch this story Monday night, but he did tonight, Tuesday. After she resigned.

“Fox News didn’t even do the story.”

Actually, Bret, Hannity and Newt tag-teamed the story last night, and this morning Lovely Laura Ingraham and the Friends turned the story over, strapped on and took it from behind. All day long, y’all’ve been pumping it with drugs to keep the story docile, and then Beck skull-f***ed it this evening. (By the way, Glenn the Christian Soldier, faith and honor personified, tried to claim at the end of today’s first segment that he hadn’t pushed the story because he didn’t know much about it, only that it was percolating. Except that he played Breitbart’s truncated tape on his show yesterday morning.)

Gotta love the blindspot needed by these people to excuse their own idiocy. So Fox is a buch of liars, Brietbart is not a journalist, and their audience is full of idiots. Yet the NAACP and the White House, while looking down their nose at these “dolts”, were somehow forced into reacting by these same idiots. Does that not then make them even dumber, and by their own admission?

@Pablo: I honestly don’t know the timing and I don’t know that I can fault the USDA for trying to limit their damage by cutting ties ASAP, but it’s the NAACP who called out Fox for “snookering”, so how does the airing of Fox primetime relate to the timing of their statement?

  • kit9

So, to sum up, the NAACP is lying again. It’s hilarious that Fox didn’t even cover the story until AFTER she had already resigned. It was the White House that tossed her under the bus and it was their fear of Fox and Glen Beck that cost the woman her job. Fox had nothing to do with it.

  • http://www.nukethefridge.com MartiniShark

Beck playing the tape on his radio show is different than said story being run on Fox. No one denied Fox ran the story, the issue is the NAACP blaming them before they ran it.

  • Pablo

Magister, note Sherrod saying she was told she needed to pull over and quit because “You’re going to be on Glenn Beck tonight.”, which it turns out she wasn’t. That makes it prior to 5 PM Eastern. The first Fox show to mention it was O’Reilly, at 8 PM. She was out of a job by then. As for the NAACP, I’m not sure exactly what the timing was, and it’s tough to say since they’ve pulled that press release. That said, they did say that they agreed with Vilsack canning her, so it was clearly after she’d resigned. As to whether they learned about any of this from Fox, let’s just say I’m dubious. Breitbart’s piece didn’t sit there all day waiting for Ben Jealous to tune into O’Reilly.

“That damned Breitbart buffaloed me!” lacks something, I think.

Because if she resigned before FNC ran those stories, they had obviously encouraged her to resign and condemned the story well before FNC ever got to it! They were “snookered” long before FNC ran the story… so how can they blame them?

The answer to that last question is easy, just scroll up and read the baseless and fact-less attacks from the band of regulars. While they screech “facts” and “lies” and so on, they have none on their side… but it doesn’t matter. If this story teaches us anything, it’s that people will perceive the “facts” as they want to, just as long as it reinforces their ideas. The actual “facts,” are less important.

  • The Dweller Ysul

“Tell us, what was Beck’s take yesterday morning? What did I miss?”

What the heck do you think Beck’s take was (and no, you didn’t miss anything)? That here was another fine example of the Obama adminstration institututionalizing black-on-white racism. This kind of thing is in ol’ White Culture’s wheelhouse.

Actually, Pat Gray had to do the heavy lifting on the radio show, because the audio was terrible. Pat played the clip and gave a brief synopsis of Ms. Sherrod’s perfidy, followed by some sturm and babble from Glenn, and finally, a promise of more, much more, to come.

I’ll concede that I didn’t watch Fox yesterday during the day, but my local afternoon radio guy had the same recording as Glenn, during the four o’clock hour. By then it was all over the net as well, and it was pretty hard to escape the conclusion that Fox, radio and the blogs were gearing up for a Full Mandingo, yet again.

I think we can all agree, however, that Andrew Breitbart is not to be trusted, right? Actually, I think we’ll be rid of him soon enough as he appeared today to be chewing up his own lips; the tongue’s surely next. And he’s not doing a lot sniffing, so you know he’s hitting the pipe.

So what you are saying then Ysul, is when this kind of story crops up it is proof of the racism on the right. But when the left uses these very same inciteful accusations it is proof of the racism on the right. That’s convenient.

  • http://SailRabbits.com Magister

@Pablo & @ImNotBlue: The NAACP are the ones who mentioned said they were “snookered by Fox News and Andrew Breitbart” and it was after referencing Jealous’ most recent statement that Baier claimed that Fox hadn’t ran the story. Now, perhaps Jealous was simply lumping the two outlets together and overstated Fox’s role, but Brett’s statement may also be inaccurate because at least two personalities on Fox did run the story, never mind that Mr. Baier apparently doesn’t consider the website part of Fox News.

Nevertheless, that is why I was trying to get a handle on how the NAACP statement was timed in relation to O’Reilly and Hannity. Yeah, some Undersecretary may have told Ms. Sherrod that she was going to be on Glenn Beck and I don’t doubt that at the time, it was a logical assumption. After all, maybe Glenn Beck has become shorthand for FNC in general, but Secretary Vilsack, the Undersecretary or someone lower on the chain hasn’t “blamed” Fox in a public statement, which is why I asked about the NAACP and why Brett made his denial in the NAACP section of his report.

Who knows if FOX did the story. They would have run it all day today. People NOW know when Fox or Bierbert show up with one of their “Fair and balanced” tapes. They probably EDITED the tape. • Latin2

    .

    The time line of the Shirley Sherrod – NAACP story reveals it all;

1 – Breibert had video on his site.

2 – NAACP denounces Sherrod and throws her under the bus.

3 – White House demands Sherrod resign and throws her under the bus.

4 – Sherrod resigns. (later tells CNN that she was FORCED to resign because the “white house” were afraid that Beck would have her on his show.

5 – Some Fox News shows do the story

7 – Glenn Beck DOES NOT have Sherrod on his show that evening.

So apparently according to the time line Obama and the NAACP JUMPED THE GUN and had a rush to judgment…and Sherrod ADMITS on CNN that she resigned because the White House was afraid of Glenn Beck..huh?

The ones defending themselves is Jealous, and the NAACP. They overreacted, and now they are trying to pass off the blame. And if you are so worried about spin why is so much of your proof based on suppositions?

Who knows if FOX did the story . . . They would have run it all day today. . . They probably EDITED the tape.” I thought making those kind of assumptions was wrong, and almost prejudicial.

You also gloss over the heart of the matter: Jealous has said they called for the White House to have her dismissed before watching the complete video. How is it then the blame of Fox, Brietbart, or anyone else that they acted so knee-jerk on this case? It is especially asinine when they have spent the better part of the past few weeks heaping scorn on those outlets, then turn around and say, “It’s not our fault we got it wrong, they snookered us?” This is sandbox whining.

  • yweston

    @MartinShort

The WH will easily get past this. Fox is going to have a hard time trying to sell the public another one of their EDITED tapes.

But, I swear, it looks like he is in his chair, behind a desk, with his pants and briefs down around his ankles. I have seldom seem such an uncomfortable, shifty, guilty look. It’s hilarious, but I am sure he was fully clothed. Perhaps, even in boxers.

TRUTH AND DECENCY DIE AT BREITBART AND AT FOX NEWS!

Even though RRK’s lies are proven to be lies over and over he keeps repeating them over and over.
Has anyone checked for RRK’s papers?

Anytime a black person is videoed expressing racist sentiments, the tape must have been ‘edited’. Breitbart must be a very skilled editor. When Shirley was asking why she should help a white farmer, Breitbart even edited in the crowd applauding.

They did it on “I Love Lucy” all the time. It’s not new technology.

And in this case, it surely was edited. So maybe you are on to something.

Looks like truth, decency, and even a modicum of rationality are dead with TRRK.

Nice job of not addressing a single point that I had made. You can bleat all you want about Fox/ Brtietbart being liars, but these are the facts:

    - Jealous and the NAACP reacted before Fox made a report on the story.
    - Brietbart’s supposed edited tape is no factor for this reason: the speech was made at a NAACP event, ergo they should have had their own tape.
    - Jealous confirmed he called for the resignation before viewing the entire tape of the speech. To come out and then blame some other source for that decision is an argument a child would make.

Primary above all this, the past week the NAACP have been railing about the racism on the Right, and the lies promulgated by Fox/Brietbart/Drudge, et al. This follows President Obama’s own crusade against Fox as less than a serious news outlet. So explain to me then, how these two entities can take action supposedly based on news outlets they have condemned? They cannot ridicule those outlets as liars, and then turn around and blame their error on listening to those outlets – at least not without coming out looking like complete fools in the end.

You are right that the NAACP and the Office of the President should be apoligizing for rushing to judgment, but BriteBart and several media organizations, including FOX, ran with the incendiary story without checking the accuracy of the story first. And they were happy to do that. That is not ethical.

    @Valkarie

I’m not sure what exactly was said by Fox to make it incendiary. These were some of the harshest words I heard:

We are appalled by her actions, just as we are with abuses of power against farmers of color and female farmers. Her actions were shameful. While she went on to explain in the story that she ultimately realized her mistake, as well as the common predicament of working people of all races, she gave no indication she had attempted to right the wrong she had done to this man.

And that was from the NAACP statement.

Yes, but FOX showed the edited video and rendered the impression, maybe not all the commentators, that the message she was giving about racist thoughts on her part were current, related to her federal job, her Obama appointment. They got that tape from BriteBart, including the impression that she was speaking about her current situation. And the tape was intentionally edited, by someone, to give that impression. That is a serious assasination of character. A calculated one. Maybe not on the part of FOX, but they are responsible for fact checking, especially when you are about to destroy someone, and also stir up racial animosity.

I never saw any of the Fox pieces on this speech, but I am certain they couldn’t play the whole video on their broadcasts just from a time perspective. I know Briebart was catching flak for editing the video, which was incorrect — he posted the speech in its entirety. It was Media Matters which had described it as “heavily edited”, which was their attempt at discrediting, and that narrative has made it into the discussion. And from what I saw from Brietbart his focus was on the NAACP, not Shirley herself.

The tape was most definitely edited to convey a certain impression. The question is, did BriteBart do that. He claims no.

  • shle896

Well, it is a blatant lie that Fox News didn’t run this story until after she resigned. There is clip after clip after clip after clip of all the Fox on-air clowns being OUTRAGED at the “racism” of her speech and once more, almost immediately after Britebar posted this ridiculousness to his blog, Fox did the same thing – and by no coincidence, it was an almost verbatim copy!

    Fox News is a JOKE.

Breitbart showed a small PORTION of the video.

“Fox News’ Bret Baier has responded to the accusation somewhat perplexed about it, as “Fox News didn’t even do the story.”

Nope, but they sure as hell posted it on their website.

Bret Baier is the BEST HARD NEWS GUY ON TV TODAY! He would never run a story without checking it out. If the Amateur Hour Bozo’s in the White House had a modicum of Bret’s professionalism, they would not have jumped the gun in firing Sherrod. And it is NOT Andy Breitbart’s fault either. His brief video did contain the part where Shirley vindicated herself. However, when she was speaking of short-changing the white farmer (before her epiphany,) you could hear the NAACP audience whooping it up and laughing. That is RACISM!!!!!!!!!! That was Andy Breitbarts reason for running the video; AFTER the NAACP called the Tea Party a bunch of RACISTS! Andy Breitbart is one of the most honest men on the web and he has millions of people behind him. Don’t mess with him!!

  • Sunnyr

    DANNY ISBELL:

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Breitbart admitted that he didn’t show the entire video.
    ———————————————————————————————————————————–

YOU are sadly misinformed! Breitbart didn’t HAVE the entire video. He received the brief clip in MARCH and didn’t do anything with it until the brain-dead loons in the NAACP came out and tried to paint the Tea Party as RACIST! His video did contain a brief statement from Shirley Sherrod about her “redemption.” The only reason Breitbart ran it was to reveal the audience laughing and affirming Shirley’s remarks about her earlier Racist actions with the white farmer.
The goofball, Ben Jealous of the NAACP, started this entire mess with his accusations of racism. He needs to step down because he doesn’t have the professionalism to run a garage sale, much less an organization like the NAACP.

    DANNY THE DOOFUS:

Nope, but they sure as hell posted it on their website.

Yes, ONLY AFTER THE MORONS IN THE WHITE HOUSE FIRED HER! The video was run that night on O’Reilly, Hannity and Greta. HOURS AFTER THE FIRING!!!!!!!!!!! Get your frickin’ facts straight!

  • Sunnyr

    DANNY THE DORK:

That was the NAACP statement BEFORE the entire vidoe became public.

    ————————————————————————————————————————–

Again, you are totally ignorant of the FACTS! The Video was the property of and owned by the NAACP. It was in their possession and could have been reviewed any time they wanted to review it. You have NO CREDIBILITY when you spew your misinformation, You should be IGNORED until you do your research and can post intelligently.
