Brit Hume: Gingrich’s Debate Performances & ‘Uncle Newt’ Persona Helping Him In Polls

video

First it was Donald Trump, then Michele Bachmann, then Rick Perry, now Herman Cain, and it looks like the next Republican presidential candidate to get his chance in the spotlight is none other than Newt Gingrich. The latest CBS News poll has Gingrich tied with Mitt Romney in second place behind Cain, and on Fox News Sunday today, Chris Wallace and the panel discussed how Gingrich became the “flavor of the week” this time around.

RELATED: Wall Street Journal: Newt Gingrich Can Win GOP Nomination

Brit Hume noted that Gingrich has been doing very well in the recent debates, and this is helping him rise above his competition.

“He seems to now have adopted a kind of a persona that is working for him. He’s Uncle Newt. He’s complimentary of his fellow candidates; he dumps all over the president, which the Republican audiences love; he’s got substantive things to say on nearly everything, as he always has. And so, in this format, he’s found a way to look good.”

Wallace suspected that many of the younger people who are starting to look to Gingrich as a potential candidate might not be familiar with his political and personal history, but Liz Marlantes suggested Gingrich has already had his dirty laundry aired to the public so many times that his past might not matter as much in this upcoming election.

Ewwwww.  ”Uncle Newt”?  Only if you’re into creepy, grumpy, backward old men as your uncle.

Not helping in my poll…..Newt is slime.

    Uncle Newt.

Say, what’s up with Uncle Omar ?

Obama’s drunk driving , false US Social Security number posessing, illegal alien uncle who was ordered to leave many years ago Uncle Omar Obama ?

    That Uncle Omar ?

If Obama gets reelected , Uncle Omar will probably be the Just Let Everybody In Czar .

  • Anonymous

Can you imagine if Obama was as pugnacious and bellicose as Newt is in debates? They would be calling him “an angry black man.”

  • Anonymous

Would love to see Newt debate the incompetent community organizer one on one without a biased moderator and no time limits!! Newt would tear him apart!!
Of course we all know Oblamer would never do this because he knows he would endure a “shellacking”!!

Like him or not Newt is wicked smart and sharp!!

  • Anonymous

It hasn’t been Newt helping Newt, it’s been the media helping Newt.
The have started a self-fulfilling prophecy.
If the media says he looks good, people believe he looks good. But it’s the same old Newt.

Fox is doing it because they are finally embarrassed by Herbert Cain and are running another trial balloon for the teabaggers, the rest of the media is doing it because they like to build ‘em up and knock ‘em down.
And no one will be more fun to knock down than Newt.

  • hondo lunchbox

Newt is smart, but he demagogues too much

  • hondo lunchbox

The US does need more taxpayers.

LOL. Now that he is president with his swollen head and all, do you think that they could restrain Obama to the time limits imposed in most debates?  He has used his long windedness to control most any interview that has been granted during his presidency not allowing the interviewer to ask questions that did not fit the president’s talking points.

I also have to wonder about the quality of moderators as how could they protect and make the president look good during a debate….  Will Obama even concede to doing a debate.  Somehow I think that he will do his best to avoid them.

what does this have to do with the story

Lol…I forgot to factor in that Oblamer would go on a never ending verbal spewage rampage…..but I don’t think Newt would sit quietly and let him get away with it like McCain did and the whole state ran media!!

I would still like to see it

Three presidential debates have already been set up. You guys truly love underestimating Obama’s debating chops. Remember, McCan was supposed to eat his lunch in 2008′s debates. That green horn Senator, however, cleaned his clock.

  • Kahlid Shiek Yerbouti

How very sad for the republicans,  Newt is rising in the polls.  Is there such a thing as a forfeit election?

  • Anonymous

Also, Gingrich has a knack of presenting opinions as if they were factual and LOOK credible. I recall about a year or two ago when he was debating Jon Stewart on that never ending enemy combatant topic and how they should be treated by the US govt when he told Stewart straight up that Richard Reid — the shoe bomber was an American citizen. That was however fallacious…but he was so confident saying so, it LOOKED credible. Just like he tried to fend off the accusations of his lobbying for one of the GSEs Fannie/Freddie and the due says he was giving them historical speeches or analysis. The guy has a penchant for sophistry and selling his lies to the uninformed and unsuspecting. He will not be able to do this with Obama, an incumbent potus who knows more about intelligence than he does.

  • Kid Dynamite

Uncle Newt is about as avuncular as Tommy’s Uncle Ernie.

Considering Hume’s track record, he should avoid familial metaphors.

  • Anonymous

    Can’t answer his legitimate question…eh?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NWVKX2P2QBPQ6FHQHCHVIC2ALQ Fedup in Florida

Yeah, but what does that have to do with Uncle Omar?

  • Anonymous

snort. yah. Fortunately he saves the smack for fundraisers and Congressional addresses.

  • Anonymous

Why are many people discarded from the political machine?

  • Anonymous

“He will not be able to do this with Obama, an incumbent potus who knows more about national intelligence than he does.”

Obama may know more about current intel but that isn’t something he can call on during a debate. Debating Newt on any given issue would be a nightmare for Obama and a joy to behold.

And I believe Obama has cornered the market on sophistry, my friend. Newt isn’t my candidate, but he’s more than able to handle Obama.

  • Anonymous

Damn I know Romney is frustrated. He’s getting beat by an extremely dickish guy who’s cheated on his wife, and another guy who harasses women. When will he realize that no one likes him.

I love how you right wing loons are so disconnected from reality that Obama is still just “a community organizer” to you. It speaks volumes about your delusions that you’re still on this talking point from FOUR YEARS AGO, which even back then was hackneyed and juvenile.

It was that community organizer who kept this country from going off the cliff into a full-scale depression, who saved the auto industry, got bin Laden, made health care coverage available to millions who didn’t have it, and successfully worked with allies to avert a humanitarian disaster in Libya.

$hit-for-brains Gingrich loves to run his mouth off but his act doesn’t play outside the Roger Ailes/Redstate media bubble. He’s a one trick pony, offering nothing more than fake outrage toward the media and nothing else.

I dare him to throw the word “elitist” at that community organizer while he sits on a quarter million dollars in jewelry charges at Tiffany. That will be must see TV!

  • Anonymous

Newt epitomizes everything that independents and Democrats have come to hate about Teapublicans: the smugness, the arrogant sense of righteousness (even when the facts say he’s wrong), the unwillingness to compromise, the pious hectoring, the fight-picking and the blatant hypocrisy. This may play well in the auditorium of these GOP debates — where booing dying people and cheering waterboarding is welcome — but put him outside in the real world and this guy’s schtick will wear very thin, very fast.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Newt’s got kind of an insurmountable women problem, methinks. And I hear that they allow women to vote these days.

  • Anonymous

Women problems never hurt the Kennedy’s.
Newts been divorced 3 times. So what.

  • Anonymous

“Uncle Newt”? Hume is a racist.

  • Anonymous

    Yawn.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Obama is way way too establishment and centrist to ever even suggest he would not debate. Even now he is saying he is “looking forward” to debating the R nominee, and I expect he means exactly that, though he’s foreseeing not Newt but Mittens.

I must say, I am loving this silly winger meme about what a great debator Newt is. The ONLY people Newt debates in this GOP Show is the media, and he takes remote cheap shots at Obama. You can’t do either of those in a 2-candidate debate in the general election: Obama is right there in the next podium to answer back, and if you want more time to answer, the moderator gives you has much time as you want, more than enough time to hang yourself.

These are not deep, closely reasoned “ideas” that Newt is throwing out. The GOP Show only allows for 30 second sound bites, and Newt is great at filling 30 seconds with sound bites. That is NOT “debating”. In fact, we’ve seen precious little actual “debating” in the GOP Show, and what we’ve seen has shown us that you can get under Romney’s skin but if you don’t he’ll beat you. The only person who’s got under Mitt’s skin so far was Perry with the sustained attack on the Mitt’s lawn care crew, and that gave the Ds a fabulous sound bite for their ads against Mitt in 2012. Gingrich tried to tussle with Mitt over the origins of Romneycare and Mitt forced him to back down; Mitt BEAT Newt in their only head to head tussle.

Now put Newt on a stage next to Obama for an hour and half or two hours, with really really sharp moderators like Jim Lehrer (I would just love Bill Moyers, or even Jon Stewart, or better yet Colbert, or O’Donnell, but no way), and Rachel Maddows – yes, Maddows is the msnbc star now, so she will be the moderator, and Brian Williams, and Jake Tapper and John Dickerson, all whip smart people who hunt down candidates like racoons bothering the chicken coop (Please not Charlie Rose, but yes, I fear, Charlie Rose …). Does anyone seriously think Newt could survive that? Please.

  • Rex the Wonder God

    In your dreams.

  • Anonymous

Newt has gone after the media in every debate and has schooled them very well….the base loves that about Newt.  I expect Politico to dig up some dirt out of nowhere and publish it soon enough and the rest of the media will do 200 stories on it…making fools of themselves like they did over the Cain non-story.  Poor Politico, sealed their fate as a member of the leftwing hit squad with that horrible piece on Cain.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Again, I don’t think that is what happened. What McCain DID do was furnish Darryl Hammond over at SNL with some really good material to lampoon McCain. And then there was that zombie pursuit thing McCain did at the end of one debate, that went viral.

But McCain handled himself fine at the debates, to the point there was no knockouts, no even knockdowns.

And McCain actually came up with a really really interesting point in one of them that foreshadowed all the ongoing problems we’ve had and STILL have with the housing industry & Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac & the humongous backlog of derivative-based debt sitting on all that at Bank of America mostly: a federal support program to get rid of all the homeowner debt to get past the scaries when the derivative debt came calling. It was the single biggest and best suggestion from the entire process and THAT was why Obama asked him to come on over the White House and work that program out -

which McCain then declined to do, because he knew the coming meme from McConnell et al was going to be “the number one priority of the Republican party and Republicans in Congress is to ensure this president becomes a one-term president”, which is ALWAYS the R goal; indeed, Beat or Impeach is always the R play book (Watch what the Rs do when Obama wins; they need to control the House, which is unlikely, but if they keep the House and gain the Senate, it’ll be impeachment all over again, just like with Clinton except not over a blow job but some other invented scandal.).

  • Rex the Wonder God

No, he is smart, too, in a third-rate community college American history lecturer sort of way.

  • Anonymous

    Yawn.

  • Rex the Wonder God

For Mittens? No freakin’ chance. Mittens knows if he manages to game his way into the nomination with a bare plurality win in state after state primary, he will be in dire, dire need of red meet to throw the base. Actually even Perry would give him some of that; but I really think we’re talking Mike Huckabee first second third and last: Southern, former Southern state governor, major Fox cred, major fundy Christian cred. Newt brings zip to the ticket that Mittens doesn’t already have covered, and that motormouth is a major liability in a national campaign.

No, what Newt’s angling for is some cabinet position that allows him lots and lots of room to pontificate. I’m thinking secretary of some proposed big reorganized Eduction & HUD super-agency, where Newt can yak and yak about Concord while deep-six-ing social security.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Jeez, Kid, have you been boning up on old George F***ing Will columns. That is some turgid stuff there.

  • Rex the Wonder God

Look, he made his hundreds of millions as a vulture capitalist, as the real life version of that guy played by Michael Douglas on that movie Wall Street, the guy with the Greed is Good speech. He knows people despise him. He was governor of Massachusetts, an historically liberal state, you don’t think he knew he was despised there? You don’t think he knows about the shots he takes for the magic undies? He is USED to being despised; it’s worked into his game plan.

But besides that, he knows perfectly well Creepy Cain is slow rolling into a ditch right now, so forget that as a serious concern on his part. Gingrich is handleable, he knows that – after all, Mitt backed him right down on the Romneycare Came From Newt debate; and Newt has no ground game, so once into the primaries, Newt sinks like a stone. All Mitt’s concerned about now is a Perry comeback, and he’s got Rove working on that.

  • Bob

So he’s creepy, philandering uncle who shows up at the holidays with his new mistress, spews a bunch of wingnutty nonsense and the rest of the family want him to hurry up and leave?

I believe ultimately the GOP felt Gingrich’s hypocrisy was costing them seats in congress.  In ’97 he was fined $300,000 dollars for ehtics violations which he claimed were untrue or a misunderstanding. He paid the fine.  I recall quite a bit being said pertaining to Mr Gingrich and the “glass houses” axiom. Despite winning an 11th term he resigned, apparently at his own party’s urging.

  • Anonymous

Because he resigned form the House after the 1998 Mid-Term elections.

Newt is a spin doctor.  When is the last time you heard him answer a direct question or present a new idea.  He tried to crush Clinton and got ran out congress.  His arrogant demeanor is his worst enemy.  Probably one of the reasons he had so many wifes.

He’ll CRUSH that intellectual dilletante in the White House!

  • norbit

As usual, we see a lot of vitriol and barbs…but where’s the substance?

Newt is specifically laying out policy intents and positions, as well as how they will be achieved.
That differs from the lies and platitudes spewing from this Administration.

I’ll give you a good example of Newt Saturday night debate:  “We don’t have a reliable intelligence service. We don’t have independent intelligence in places like Pakistan. We rely on our supposed friends for intelligence.  They may or may not be our friends.  And the amount of information we might or might not have, might or might not be reliable.”

This came from your buddy Newt mouth Saturday night.  First of all what the hell is he talking about and we are not at war with a WWII Germany.   We are fighting a invisable enemy. Secondly how does he think we found Osama bin Laden.  What do you expect from a history major. Norbit if you plan to support such an idiot good luck.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VECY4YT2K3N7ZKO5YU43PSD63I JPrimus

Atta boy, Newt.  I can’t wait for the first debate when he sticks a red-hot poker up Obama’s ass.  I think that all he has to do is come out, act contrite about his past, ask why he’s any different than the philandering and perjuring Bill Clinton, and proceed to dismantle Barack Obama brick-by-brick.

He will also have his legislative partnerships and work with Bill Clinton to run on as well.  Big plus.

It’s great to see you admit that your self righteous pomposity from earlier was purely partisan. Me reporting or commenting on racial archetypes does not make me a racist….tool. Who am I racist against? Did you even know what my ethnicity was before running your mouth?

  • Anonymous

I  really do not bother with ethnicity, It does not play a part in my thinking except when I see blatant racist remarks it scars my heart. I sometimes react rather than act. This is wrong. I am not a self righteous pompous person although this is a compliment compared to other comments I receive from hate mongers on mediate. I  have a habit of fighting fire with fire. The immature hateful attacks that I see in the posts are met with a small amount of overkill on my part. Then I meet someone that is a thoughtful person that offers dialogue rather than spewing hate. I feel a bit guilty.
I am not pompous.I have to admit that it is hard not to be when I am right nine nine percent of the time.  I have to fight my human nature and realize that on some issues, I could be wrong, The one percent keeps me humble. I have also been blessed by receiving instruction from Hindu Masters while in India. I have furthered my learning by spending time communicating with the monks from the temple in Kyong Ju South Korea. I am a Christian and a follower of the words of Christ  with the teaching of the masters of Asia blended into my spiritual being. You would think, I would be above human emoitions, As hard as I try, I fail in the matter of tolerance.  In a controversy the instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.”Buddha. You can see with all the wisdom and knowledge that is part of my being  I might appear pompous to a liberal of lesser enlightenment.
I am on the path of learning and my intolerance for those who do not possess eternal wisdom and understanding of the environment which surround us; who can not see, the evil plot to take away our freedom  brings out anger. I am working on being more patience with liberals that can not tie their shoes without government assistance and then they  have the audacity to lecture and condemn good men.
Defend this: We have to borrow money to from China to pay our seniors social security and medicare, this is in the words of Obama. If we do not pass the bill to raise the debt limit we may not have the money to pay social security. The government will not enforce our immigration laws and allows millions of illegals to live in our country. We provide free education, free food, in some cases free houses. How do you logically an morally take tax payer money to support Pablo from Mexico family while my grandmother and your grandmother is suffering. Pablo and his family are the responsibility of  Mexico’s Government, not ours. This is totally illogical and immoral.Seniors have not had a cola increase since Obama took office.  I want your take on this and explain how it is moral and logical.  I would like your honest take on other issues.

It’s not about his personal shady life (although it’s despicable), it’s about his Public shady life. THIS ISN’T ABOUT THE MEDIA, IT’S ABOUT NEWT’S RECORD!!! He is NOT a conservative!!!Gingrich is no Tea Party conservative. Gingrich “has a long history of supporting the same government healthcare mandates in RomneyCare and ObamaCare,” even though Gingrich has campaigned on the pledge to repeal ObamaCare. Likewise, Gingrich was a supporter of the Wall Street bailouts and TARP, as well as the bailout of the Mexican peso, and campaigned on behalf of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Despite the failure of the ethanol subsidies, Gingrich has been a leading advocate for them, and has even pushed for what he calls “green conservatism,” asserting that it is the role of the federal government to “finance cleaner energy research and projects with new oil and gas royalties.” Furthermore, during Gingrich’s reign as Speaker of the House, federal spending increased from $1.227 trillion to $1.383 trillion, while federal tax receipts increased by over 50 percent. After Gingrich served as Speaker of the House, he became a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, which was a key advocate of the invasion of Iraq.Gingrich backed federal education funding from his earliest days in office, though the Constitution gives absolutely no authority over education to any branch of the federal government. He helped garner support to create President Jimmy Carter’s Department of Education in 1979. Since then educational spending has soared while educational standards have plummeted. Things got worse when he was Speaker. In 1996, then-Republican Party Chairman Haley Barbour bragged that “education spending went up under the Republican Congress as much as it went up under the Democratic Congress.” That is a bit of an understatement since Gingrich’s Republican Congress increased education funding by $3.5 billion in 1996, the largest single increase in history.
