David Gregory: Christie’s Had a ‘Good Ride in the Media,’ But That Might Be Over Now

David Gregory has already indicated that New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s Bridgegate scandal will be the top story on this weekend’s Meet The Press. But first, he appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews to give his take on the growing controversy and Christie’s political future.

Looking forward to 2016, Matthews noted that “the shape of the field has changed radically in 48 hours.” He claimed that the bridge scandal he effectively erased Christie’s “frontrunner” status, asking Gregory, “Now what happens to the Republican Party?”

“This is part of the problem of peaking so early, and he has had a good ride in the media,” Gregory said. He said that the scandal means Christie will be getting his “scrubbing” from the national media a bit earlier than anyone anticipated.

“History is replete with people who have died and come back,” Matthews’ other guest David Axelrod added, “not necessarily because of an incident like this, but sometimes because of it.” He didn’t put it past Christie to emerge from the scandal victorious. “Part of running for president is you get tested along the way and you either pass the test and get stronger or you fail the test and you’re gone,” he said. “And I don’t think we’ll know for some time just where Christie fits in that in whole tale.”
