GOP Presidential Hopeful Fred Karger Files A Complaint Against Fox News

Fred Karger, a political consultant and gay rights activist seeking the Republican nomination, has filed a complaint against Fox News after the network allegedly did not allow him to participate in last week’s Ames, Iowa caucus debates. The first person to announce his candidacy, Karger says he met with the network’s criteria to participate, but was nonetheless shut out. And he’d like the Federal Election Commission to figure out just why that was.

In a press release, he hints that discrimination might be at play:

I am the first openly gay major-party candidate to ever run for president of the United States. I have experienced many doors slammed in my face by individuals and outside political organizations during the past 18 months, but this blatant affront by Fox News executives smacks of discrimination, and I hope the commission will investigate post-haste.

Additionally, Fox News “never released acceptable polling companies or acceptable polling methodology in its pre-established objective criteria,” the complaint states, and that it would appear that “Fox News changed their criteria in order to exclude me.”

Yesterday, Karger Tweeted a picture of himself dropping off his 158-page complaint against Fox News and News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch at the network’s Manhattan headquarters:

Why is this site almost nothing but attacks on Republicans or Fox News? There are so many stories about Democrats and their media that Mediaite ignores on a daily basis. Why don’t you just admit you’re just another Democrat party mouth piece?

If you all want to see what Mediaite ignores, check these sites out:

    http://newsbusters.org/
    http://hotair.com/

  • JA T

I thought they limited to candidates who were polling at least 1%. That’s why McCotter who is a sitting congressman couldn’t participate. So, I don’t know where this guy claims he met the criteria.

  • Michelle

Why, because they are liberal lapdogs.

    ps, Serious candidates were invited.

  • Anonymous

Wait, what?  The FEC has jurisdiction over a presidential primary TV debate?  Huh?

  • Anonymous

No one is forcing you come here. You could stay and read the stuff that hotair in newsbussters feed you.

  • Anonymous

Fringe information but since it’s FNC related, it had to be headlined here at mediaite.  Is this h/t MM? (jk).

So funny; why bother to even report it.

I haven’t seen a headline here about Obama’s falling poll numbers….I guess that kind of news doesn’t matter around here.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I’m sure all three of his supporters were quite upset.

  • Johnny Cakes

Doesn’t this happen every election cycle? Some no name believes he needs to be in some TV debate and the story goes nowhere.

  • Anonymous

Looks like Dronetek struck a nerve!

Nah! Only in a paranoid mind will that thought come into being.

Is Newsbusters still promoting the story about Obama being the anti-Christ?

  • Anonymous

Now I know he struck a nerve!

    Oh, snap!

  • BR

    Because that would be racist!!!!!!

  • Anonymous

I know I constantly touch yours, So am not surprised you are trying to dig a hole. Keep digging!

  • BR

I don’t think he asked if he should stay or go, did he?  But that is such a typical liberal response.

  • Anonymous

I’m digging a hole, dear- and it’s for YOU!

    LOL

  • Valkyrie101

Why does this story constitute bias?

  • GrOwuP!

This seems to be a common refrain among the “victimized” conservatives here.  Theres a certain group who wakes up every morning, reads the top posts, and then complains.  I see plenty of criticisms of democrats here, but strangely enough, i dont see any criticisms of republicans on newsbusters.  If you dont just read what you want to read you will see plenty of balance.  Did they not give FNC credit for the debate? Did they not do a fair job with the Megyn Kelly interview? Do they not show liberals attacking obama every day?

I’ll admit most of the authors here are liberals, but thats to be expected since they only hire college grads. If you compare Mediaite to most blogs its very fair, which is why so many independants/ blue dogs/ RINO’s come here.

No matter, the GOP commenters will only see what they waqnt to see.  Guess thats just the mentality that Hannity, Beck, Roger Ailes, and Brent Bozell have ingrained in them.  (and the blogs i dont read i guess).  Even if this site is 75% liberal, they DO cover the excesses of MSNBC, and report objectively on most major media stories.  If you only want to hear the side that says your right, you know where to go.

  • Anonymous

    It’s a headline story because:

    1. He’s a protected class (gay)
    2. Fox News is involved
    3. This is Mediate

No matter how ridiculous the claim, you will always get media attention if your gay.

  • Valkyrie101

Or if you are Joe the plumber.

  • Dstycampbell

someone should tell Karger to google James Buchanan. “first gay candidate to run for President” REALLY?

  • Yukon Jack

    Who is Fred Karger??

  • ImNotBlue

I don’t really have a problem with this story.  It’s a guy (allegedly) running for President, with an interesting hook, and a “why” he wasn’t allowed to debate that involves a major news network.  Seems like a fair topic to me.

HOWEVER… the bias Mediaite exhibits in this piece isn’t actually in the story selection, it’s in the presentation of the story.  When Mediaite writes an article about a Republican complaining about a Democrat or left-wing policy, they’re almost always sure to include a line or two from the opposite perspective, or an argument (or some snark) as to why their opinion is wrong.  When Mediaite writes an article about a Democrat or a left-wing person, it’s usually just a straight “here’s what they said,” story… with little or no outside opinion or snark.

It’s essentially the same as, “Here’s what Hannity said, and why you should roll your eyes,” versus “Here’s what Maddow said, and what a good argument it was.”  They’re relatively consistent with this formula.

That said, this story is more of the same.  Where is the statement from FNC?  Where are the statements investigating this guy’s past?  Where’s the snark that nobody up until this point has heard about him, or his candidacy?

It’s not there, because that’s simply not how they write their stuff.

  • ImNotBlue

JtP would have gotten no publicity if it weren’t for the fact that he confronted candidate Obama while on the campaign trail, and had Obama’s response not been so surprisingly honest.

  • ImNotBlue

So even if it’s 75% liberal spin… they still do SOME things fairly!  And isn’t that enough?!  It’s not balanced (despite their claims), or fair, or even-handed… but every once in a while they throw you a bone… isn’t that enough?

Is that the gist of your argument?

  • ImNotBlue

Is Mediaite supposed to be on par with Newsbusters?

  • ImNotBlue

So what you’re saying is that the left is constantly annoyed and upset by what FOX does… but doesn’t actually watch or know what they do.  They only repeat what two organizations spoon feed them to think?

Are you sure you want that to be your opinion?  I might take some time to re-think that.

  • ImNotBlue

What the heck are you talking about?

  • Anonymous

It’s too painful to sit through an ignorant conversation. Either they are dumbing it down for you their viewers or they are just dumb or are willingly malicious liars.

Every time a story comes up that critcises Fox News or the right conservatives can never address the critcism directly.

All you ever hear is moaning about bias, being attacked, main stream media etc etc to deflect away from the issue at hand.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dronetek-Bulk-Vanderhuge/100000918732763 Dronetek Bulk Vanderhuge

They ignore a whole lot and disproportionately focus on the party out of power and the ONE network that gives the news from a right leaning perspective.

  • ImNotBlue

So you need someone to tell you how to think, because you can’t bear to hear someone else’s opinion, especially if they disagree with yours.  Got it.

He got attention, on FOX, because he was antagonistic to Obama. It didn’t even matter that he really was not a plumber. Eventually, he was on stage with McCain and Sarah.

Are you saying that FOX was the only network to give this guy any kind of platform?  And “Joe the Plumber” was his media name.  No, it doesn’t matter that he’s not really a plumber… his “plumbing skills” weren’t really integral to the story.

  • BR

So you form your opinion about Fox News by what someone else who watched told you that they said?  Hmmmm.  Now maybe I can begin to understand why liberals are so ill informed.

  • Anonymous

I couldn’t agree more. This is not above-the-fold type news, but I’ll admit I thought it was worth a closer look when I saw the headline. On the surface, it sounded like news to me. Then I read the piece and it became clear Mediaite had found an attention-seeking activist of a cause to which they are sympathetic and who could possibly cast conservatives in a bad light if presented in a certain way.

On the bright side, it’s so painfully obvious that I wouldn’t even consider it the usual propaganda. The people who are looking for a reason to point fingers will point them and the rest of us hopefully will shrug and move on.

  • Valkyrie101

The “story” that is being covered relates to a man filing a complaint with the Election Commision over being banned from the recent republican debate. Is that story that dissimilar to Mediaite’s coverage of the nut that sued Maddow?

  • Valkyrie101

I remember the story well. I saw the Obama meeting with Joe before he got notoriety. He was made famous on FOX News.

  • ImNotBlue

    Well, read that story:

    http://www.mediaite.com/online/christian-metal-rocker-sues-rachel-maddow-for-50-million-network-calls-suit-baseless/

Tell me which one seems more sarcastic and snarky.  It’s pretty clear things follow just as I said, no?

  • ImNotBlue

He got notoriety FROM meeting with Obama.  Of course he had no notoriety before then.

And he was made “famous” post that moment.

  • Valkyrie101

Snarky? :-) Both relate to lawsuits. One filed by an anti-gay Christian upset that he was outed as someone at odds with gays, the other by a gay man seeking to be included in republican debates. And these were just blurb stories not intended to be comprehensive, just fodder for our discussion.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GWUMDXSUYVXFOVKEDR7OG3SD7A John Doe

    You forgot to add http://www.theblaze.com/

For a healthy democratic civilized society, the media was originally meant to be a “Watchdog” for the Republic, keeping an eye of scrutiny on the government on behalf of the governed citizenry. But instead of being a watchdod, the liberal media have all be become “Lap-dogs” for Obama and the Democratic party.

Here is a good example of one of the major “news media” networks working for Obama rather than keeping an eye of scrutiny on him, they quickly deleted it from their website and claimed it was a mistake; Mediaite and Tommy Christopher never covers these stories:

    http://www.theblaze.com/stories/why-is-cbs-news-selling-barack-obama-merchandise-in-its-online-store/

  • Anonymous

If this guy was supposedly polling so well, why is it that this is the first time anybody’s ever heard of him?

  • ImNotBlue

The above story is pretty straight (pun), no opinion, no snark, just “here’s how it is.”

The other story includes lines like:
“If you’re not up on your Christian metal rock, you might not know Bradlee Dean…”
“According to Dean’s lawyer, Dean was, you know, just talking about politics and stuff…”

    Seems a little snarky, no?

Plus, look at how much time is spent on the Maddow story talking to BOTH sides.  Where is FNC’s POV in the above story?  Where’s their comment?  Did anyone try to reach them, or do we just take Mr. Karger’s word for it?

    See the difference?

  • Anonymous

So that’s why you are salivating over Fred!

  • Anonymous

That was so autobiographical, dear. Thanks for sharing! You are a Huckleberry!

  • Anonymous

Well that’s what I thought too. I’d never heard of this Karger before. You can’t have 50 people on the stage because you have to include everyone who ever thought about running. Is Karger included in the upcoming NBC debate?

  • Anonymous

That exchange with Obama and JtP got play on all the networks, not just Fox. It was news because of Obama’s “spread the weath around” comment.

  • Anonymous

    You’re wasting your time…

It’s not; you just need to pay better attention.

Maybe a different news source than Fox where you get informed rather than programmed.

  • Victor Tiffany

Instead, we got more of push the wealth upward.

  • Victor Tiffany

One of the points of contention is that he’s polling over 1% in an average of 5 national polls.

Why are Fox viewers so ignorant?  That’s a rhetorical question.

  • Victor Tiffany

    1) You don’t bite the hand that feeds you and
    2) Fox is the propaganda channel. That makes them more newsworthy than a news channel.

  • Anonymous

most recent polls, but i see you leave that out GBR

  • Valkyrie101

I suppose, but mediaite is just as likely to not cover either of the stories, as cover them, since mediaite is by no means a news site. It comments on matters relating to media coverage. The Christian rock guy probably deserved the snark since he was quoted as being, at best, anti-gay, and at worst, a fringe lunatic. Karger, on the other hand, appears to have no such freak.

  • Valkyrie101

Wonder why, therefore, Joe became a national level republican spokesperson?

  • QWE

leave it to moron dronetek to not comment on the actual story, but to whine about his imagined unfairness

  • QWE

this story is proof again of the republican’s INHERENT bigotry

  • rjudge

Well, articles on Newsbusters and Hotair are nothing at all except attacks on Democrats, liberals, MSNBC, and the rest of the so-called “lame-stream media.”

I don’t think you read Mediaite all too carefully.  I see articles attacking both Republicans and Democrats.

Further, don’t you find it interesting that this particular story is about a Republican, I repeat, a Republican, who has filed a complaint against Fox News?

And, please read this article again, closely.  This article is in no way, shape, or form an “attack” on Fox News (or a Republican).  It is reporting the facts surrounding this guy filing a complaint against Fox News.

  • rjudge

I think the reason why this guy was not invited is not only because he is gay; it is because Fox News thought that a fight might break out between Karger and Rick “man on dog” Santorum!

  • Valkyrie101

No, if you follow the link back up you will see that the whole matter was originally one of those insufferable drone attacks. Did you hear that whooshing sound?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SIYF5565LXG7BBKTKGSSFWU7TA The Rock

Thad McCotter wasn’t at the debate last week either and that is Greg’s boy host of Red Eye & The Five as well Greg said that you had to have 1% to be in this debate. So that maybe the reason why Fox didn’t have Fred Karger on the debate like McCotter who has no chance of wining NOM either. Thad McCotter if he wanted to go into higher office it should have been running for US Senator in my home state of Michigan congressmen from east side of state didn’t even know who he was until he was thinking of running before entering.

  • Anonymous

Both  Johnson and Roemer were blocked from the CNN debate, and Fox’s recent one. The media likes to play kingmaker and picks and chooses in its coverage. But people don’t care as long as they get bias that tells them what they want to hear, while thy whine about bias they disagree with.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Todd-Scheller/100000832449863 Todd Scheller

    Victor,
He had to poll at an AVERAGE of 1% in 5 of the most recent polls, he then wanted to use TWO  polls from Zogby. Thus invalidating the oldest Zogby poll, meaning he only had four not five of the most recent pools. Why is Victor Scott Tiffany so ignorant? Really, answer the question, I want to know.
It might help if you actually read all the rules of the debate, there are only three.
    1. Registered with the Federal Elections Commission as a presidential exploratory committee or presidential campaign
    2. Meet all U.S. Constitutional requirements
    3. Garnered at least an average of one percent in five national polls based on most recent polling leading up to the registration day.

  • Hagen619dj

Always.  I have never heard of this guy.  Being gay “probably” did have something to do with it.  Honestly, do we need a gay guy as a president.  Kissing and slobbing all over another guy when ever the opportunity presented itself. This country for years has appreciated a marriage between a man and a woman. Now the gay people think they should have the same rights. We have enough trouble in this country raising our children in complete homes without them being inundated with this kind of morally unexceptable activity. Yes, I will say it.  We all step around the real reason and don’t say anything because of correctness.  Being in public office and gay is not exceptable in this country. Maybe in time it will be…but not while these next two generations are still living. As the morals decay in this country…in time, I’m sure it will pass in exceptance. But not yet.  And by the way, it is not racist.  Racist has to do with color…not being gay.

  • Sandie

Another idiot challenging the 1%/5 poll average? I thought we closed the door on that one with biggy. I guess reading comprehension is a problem for some people here….

Aren’t those sites Republican party mouth pieces? If you are going to make a bias complaint, don’t try to justify it by pointing to other bias outlets. Plus, if you feel that way about Mediate, then don’t use them as a source of news. That’s what I do with Fox News. I don’t read their crap, and I don’t watch their CRAP. Its really easy, just ignore it. I know who Sean Hannity is and what he stands for. For that reason, I never watch his crappy racist show or buy his crappy racist books.
