Herman Cain Admits To Hannity He Didn’t Know What ‘Right Of Return’ Meant
Herman Cain may have just slyly avoided his own “what newspapers do you read?” moment. After getting caught flat-footed on Fox News Sunday over his position on the Palestinian right of return, Cain returned to the network Monday and got a second chance to answer the question. Cain made no excuses: “I didn’t understand the right of return,” he told Sean Hannity, though sticking by his original answer.
After answering a warm-up question on why he believes he would be the best candidate for the job (“my approach to problem solving will work in government,” he argued), the Republican presidential hopeful then had to field one more question on the Palestinian right of return: does he understand it? Many people seemed to think he didn’t. Cain’s response? “They are exactly right:”
Chris [Wallace] caught me off-guard. I didn’t understand the right of return. That came out of left field, out of all the questions I anticipated him asking me, I didn’t even conceive of him asking me about the right of return. I now know what that is. The thing that you’re going to learn about Herman Cain, if he doesn’t know something, he’s not going to try and fake it or give an answer that he doesn’t know what hes talking about. Now here’s the thing about that right of return that I’ve learned since Sunday. It wasn’t that they were kicked out of Israel by the Jews, no! Their Arab leaders asked them to leave because they thought they were going to annihilate what was left, and then they’re going to go back. So yes, I still stick by my answer.
A gutsy move if there ever was one, considering that, now that he had read up on the matter, he could have easily said and demonstrated he knew what he was talking about. The little bit of third-person Bob Dole in there probably doesn’t do any ill in endearing him to potential voters, either, especially the sort that were already enamored by him in the first presidential debate.
