Jake Tapper On Christie’s Weight: Presidential Candidacies Are ‘Physically Demanding’

video

On This Week today, Christiane Amanpour brought up a point often raised about any potential candidacy undertaken by Chris Christie: whether his weight problem would be a negative with voters or not. However, while the panelists didn’t seem to agree with that sentiment, Jake Tapper suggested the grueling work of a presidential candidacy might be too hard on the governor.

Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Matt Katz pointed out that over the summer, Christie was taken to the hospital for an asthma attack and the media followed in hot pursuit, speculating whether the medical visit was due to his weight.

But Tapper offered a different perspective, and looked at the physical challenges Christie might have running a campaign in his current state of health.

“It is an incredibly grueling thing to run for president. It is incredibly physically demanding on a candidate. And I think there is a question about somebody who is that unhealthy whether he or she could keep up with 18-hour days for the next nine years.”

Jake Tapper On Chris Christie’s Weight Problem: Presidential Candidacies Are ‘Physically Demanding’

True , Jake . These days you have to be able to play basketball and lots of golf . You have sightseeing to do , concerts to attend and you must not sprain your arm patting yourself on the back . You have to campaign for four years straight , with your hand out to haul in as much loot as you can . And , there are plenty of parties to plan , with lots of decorating to supervise and coordinate .

  • Texan

    6’2″ and 110 lbs isn’t exactly healthy…

  • http://twitter.com/darrenmcgeary Darren McGeary

So Jake, and every other reporter and pundit who is suddenly so concerned about Chris Christie’s weight, at what BMI is a person automatically disqualified from being President?Yet another example of the ‘tolerance’ of the left.  Fat people need not apply.

Isn’t tis the same right that called clinton fat?  lol lol you righties are too funny.

  • Randy

I didn’t know Christie was fat Thank You Washington media for telling me this nonstop all week and into the weekend.

Since the Democrats can’t run on their track record, they are forced to resort to this garbage.

And since Mediaite doesn’t want to cover stories about the disasters Obama has created in the economy, the war fronts, etc. they are forced to cover this as if it were a real story.

Here’s some feedback for Mediaite:  Ten percent of Americans unemployed is a real story.  And remains so, even if you won’t mention it.  A candidate’s waistline is irrelevant.

  • Cecelia

Christie is a good candidate for bariatric surgery.

WIth that and a healthy regime. in five months he could bring that criticism to a dull roar.

Either that or he adopts the campaign slogan of “I may be fat, but you’re a moron and I can always lose weight”….

  • Republicans are Liars

Nobody wants a fat pig leading our country. People are fat for a reason. It is a character flaw. Either they eat too much or don’t exercise or both. Either way, it shows a lack of self control. There are enough pigs at the trough in Washington. We don’t need another loud mouth oinker taking up space there.

  • Republicans are Liars

Go on a diet and think about it…

  • Republicans are Liars

Hey moron, if it wasn’t for the the things the President did there would be 15% unemployment. Plus, if the idiot Republicans hadn’t got in his way we would probably be close to being out of this. WTF up.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/MetaphysicalSciences Christine Breese

Next, they’ll have to have a physical before they’re allowed to run for office!

    Rush Limbaugh’s ”It’s not a ruse!” diet?

  • Irish189

what is that in relation too?

“I may be fat, but you’re a moron and I can always lose weight”….

I’ve always hated this snarky, idiotic fallacy. It’s extremely easy to educate yourself. It’s incredibly difficult to undo morbid obesity.

  • Anonymous

christy vs. OBOZO = a competent, effective fat guy vs. a clueless, shallow, profane,  arrogant, platitude-spouting, corrupt, inexperienced, Marxist, ego-maniacal, drug-addicted, elitist, narcissistic, flip-flopping, racist, anti-Semitic gas-bag.

    Tough choice !!!!!

  • Anonymous

Unemployment under Bush was never more than 7%. Things have gotten worse under Obama — by every possible measure.

But this is no surprise.  You can’t create jobs, while constantly attacking, micro-managing, over-regulating and vilifying the people and companies who do the hiring.  This is obvious to all reasonable people.

  • Irish189

Lets call this for what it is

    1. Should the candidates health be a concern?

UM, yes, because you have to be healthy to do your job which means long work hours on the campaign trail which equals higher potential for stress levels, less chance for exercise and good nutrition. If someone is not physically able to do these things without collapsing then it does beg the question how could they be expected to handle the toll it takes on your health as president

    2. The presidency affects your health

Anyone see pics of GWB and Obama when they first were elected compared to what they look like after or presently?
The job takes a toll on you and Bush and Obama have aged alot and they are two individuals who take take their health somewhat seriously, exercise and proper nutrition have been shown to reduce stress levels and lower risks of heart attack, stroke, etc where lets face facts, the risk would probably be alot higher then normal life, if it takes a toll on generally healthy people it legit raises the question on what it will do to someone who is unhealthy aka can the function at that high a level on a consistent basis?

    3. Americans are shallow

Sad but true, if the media was around like this a century ago I don’t think Taft would have been elected anymore then FDR,  people want their representatives to be good looking, in great health, in addition to all of the “other requirements” like competency. If i had a dollar for every time i had to hear a pundit say mitt romney and Rick Perry have “presidential looks” or “presidential hair” I could bail out greece.  Plus i think on some level people think that if you can take care of yourself then maybe you can take care of the rest of the country.

    4. Christie isn’t fat, he’s morbidly obese

Thats just calling a spade a spade, Bill Clinton was fat, Christie is approaching the levels to where its just dangerous for his health to be carrying around that much weight, he needs to lose weight for his good, campaigning aside, too many studies have shown the benefits of good exercise and nutrition and if Christie wants to preform at top performance both mentally and physically he would do well to change some of his habits, if you want your body to take care of you then you must take care of your body. Christie’s chances of diabties, stroke, heart attack, etc are all increased, why wouldn’t anyone want to take steps to reduce that risk especially if they want to function at a high mental and physical level.

Jack Tapper isn’t wrong by saying the presidency and campaigning for it are hard physical and mental chores and anyone rooting for christie shouldn’t be condemning Tapper for saying Christie needs to  get healthier. Thats just the facts. Whatever the motivation is I’m pretty confident in saying that regardless, a chris christie on a good diet and proper exercise is better for his health

Really it is? You seem to be failing at the education part. And there are several surgeries that have helped hundreds of thousands of Morbidly Obese people leave normal lives.

  • http://twitter.com/Staciisa_bitch Staci Chase

I agree he’s just too large to go through the election process.  Maybe by 2016 he will be in better shape to take on a grueling campaign.  It’s all about common sense.

  • Anonymous

I’m thrilled that you have brought your idiocracy to the debate Todd. Let the truth now be told.

  • Anonymous

The Fatist strikes again. I am beginning he has an obsession with fat hatred.

  • Anonymous

So now you are trying to deny that Lap Band, Gastric By pass, or a Gastric sleeve surgery exists? Who is the one bringing the idiocracy to the debate?

  • Pookie

Mr. Tapper’s comments are very true.   Mr. Christie could not hold a candle to Pres. O when it comes to campaigning.   Back then, Senator Obama, worked solidly on the campaign trail for over a year and a half w/o any time off.  I certainly remember that time.  People were remarking “How does this man do it.?”
Now, Mr. Christie had better think long and hard before he commits to a greueling campaign.

  • Pookie

Democrats forced to resort to this garbage.!   Please.

This as an aside….I love to report this.   More political Democrats  have served in the armed forces than Republicans ever have.

  • Pookie

Do you know the answer to this?   It is because the Repubs block anything and everything that Ob ama wants to do for our country.
No sir.   You can’t blame Pres. O on this one.

  • Pookie

I am an elitist and I love it.   Hatred  and lies will get you nowhere.

  • Anonymous

Please explain and expand upon the gibberish that you just put forth.

  • Anonymous

Jake Tapper is right on the money.

Add to that what Rush Limbaugh has said about ”fat Presidents” and you can count Christie out.

  • Anonymous

    Treason_Detector,
Hate to have to tell you this but 1) Christie is not running, and 2) He is a Governor, not President, and 3) He is still smaller than William Howard Taft, a man that lived for 27 years after his term as President.

  • expatpatriot

So your suggestion to Mediaite’s editorial board is to cover one story: unemployment.

I take it you don’t work in the media.

  • expatpatriot

Earth to Felix: Bush and his buddies wrecked the economy and then left town as the tsunami was hitting.

This was their plan from Day 1. Loot and run away. It’s a Republican thing. They expect to come back in a few years when they’ve put another one of their geldings in the White House, and sweep up any loose change that’s left over.

  • Anonymous

I wonder what the fatist will have to say next? I can hardly wait for you to shoot him down again!

  • Anonymous

When you have something other than red herring, convoluted jibberish, give me a shout.

  • Anonymous

How is naming three different surgeries used to treat the morbidly obese gibberish? The Roux-en-Y anastomosis (Gastric-by-Pass) has been around since the 1930′s. Lap band has been around since the 1970′s.

  • Anonymous

The only red herring here is the one in your comment. Likewise for convoluted gibberish. Let us know when you can figure out enough to get yourself in trouble again. You are famous for going off half-cocked, but even more so for your hang-fires.

Did you ever figure out what red herring means? Apparently not.

  • Anonymous

How were those three facts Red Herrings? Try a little research into literary fallacy before you claim someone is using them. How many different ways are you going to try and spell gibberish? Only one is correct.

  • Anonymous

For two years, Obama had control over Congress and Senate and was able to pass virtually anything he wanted….with disastrous results.

You can’t blame the failed stimulus on Republicans.

And you can’t blame the huge borrowings under Obama — another $4 billion every day! — on Republicans

You can’t blame the intensely unpopular Obamacare bill on Republicans

You can’t blame the job-killing Frank-Dodd bill on Republicans

You can’t blame the third war front in Libya on Republicans

You can’t blame the lack of promised “shovel ready jobs” on the Republicans

You can’t blame the idiotic “recovery summer” touted by the White House — which failed to show any recovery — on the Republicans

Face it, the Obama administration has been a series of disasters and fiascoes.  No wonder the liberal media would rather talk about Gov. Christie’s weight.

  • Anonymous

If you read my posts, I am merely asking that Mediaite cover real stories, instead of bogus ones.  Face the embarrassing facts:

Mediaite runs more stories on Levi Johnston than on the national debt

Mediaite runs more stories on Donald Trump than on the unemployment situation

Mediaite runs more stories on Bristol Palin than on the war fronts

Mediaite runs more stories on witchcraft in Delaware than on the economy

Mediaite runs more stories on Governor Christie’s weight than on the border

Mediaite runs more stories on Rupert Murdoch than on the war on terror

This approach is understandable — as liberals they are embarrassed to refer to the President’s many failures.   But it destroys the credibility of this web site, which looks like a tool for the DNC without any real journalistic standards.

  • Anonymous

And with three war fronts in operation right now, Obama is using more troops than Republicans too.   But don’t expect any coverage of the incoherent Obama military agenda at Mediaite.   That belongs on the long list of stories that cannot be mentioned.

  • Cecelia

Frankly the moniker you’ve chosen absolutely disputes your claim.

How were those three facts Red Herrings? – ToddSheller

Did you ever figure out what red herring means? Apparently not. – doodaddio

    The Nizkor Project…

A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue. The basic idea is to “win” an argument by leading attention away from the argument and to another topic. This sort of “reasoning” has the following form:

Topic A is under discussion. Topic B is introduced under the guise of being relevant to topic A (when topic B is actually not relevant to topic A). Topic A is abandoned.

    A) I  make a comment agreeing that Jake Tapper’s assessment, adding that support from Rush Limbaugh will not only make the campaign trail physically difficult, but a losing situation.
B)Hate to have to tell you this but…

    1) Christie is not running. Irrelevant. Tapper was speculating about Christie’s possible run.

    2) He is a Governor, not President. Irrelevant. See #1.

    3) He is still smaller than William Howard Taft, a man that lived for 27 years after his term as President. Irrelevant for multiple reasons. Citing that Taft lived beyond his Presidency at the turn of the centuty, does not not change the known medical science of obesity a century later. Taft campaigned for President by train, which is obviously less “grueling ” than constant jet flights involving “jet lag”. Despite what you claim, Christie does not look “smaller” than Taft. And, last, Taft’s longevity, after the Presidency, was aided by a significant loss of weight and a renewed interest in exploring the outdoors.

Gibberish (sometimes spelled Jibberish) is a generic term…

“I think it’s something that he is so solid rhetorically, he’d be able to flip it around and use it to his advantage, potentially.” – Matt Katz

It would appear that Mr. Katz believes that Governor Christie can turn his “morbid obesity” into a positive campaign strategy.

Rush Limbaugh disagrees with Mr. Katz…

From the Rush Limbaugh Show, December 19, 2007, in a transcript segment titled “The Era of Big Presidents is Over”:

Look, this is my point. Appearance in the visual arts — and politics is a visual art because it’s on television — matters. It just does. Now, it’s a little less important the smaller the election. In a state election, it’s not that big a deal. In a local election, it’s even less big a deal. Nationally, though? This kind of stuff, when you’re talking about presidents, it matters. I can’t remember the names off the top of my head, but if you go back prior to the advent of television, we had some tubs as president. We had some huge guys, fat guys, Chester Alan Arthur. (interruption) Warren Harding. They were pigs by today’s standards. But back then, it was a sign of success. Overweight men, titans, it was a sign of prominence, a sign of power, a sign of great wealth and success. Today, it doesn’t say that at all as an image. It says something else: no discipline, doesn’t care, slob, all these things.
No matter how well dressed you are; no matter how neatly coiffed you are, if you’re fat, you’re still a pig –
    - Rush Limbaugh

I disagree with Limbaugh on just about everything, especially his choice of words when discussing obesity issues. But his observation that “The era of big Presidents is over”, is accurate.

I still want them to take a shot at it, though…

    ***CHRISTIE-LIMBAUGH 2012***

  • Anonymous

it is about self discipline, it is about self respect . Of which Christie has none . You can not ask for discipline with out self discipline . you can not have respect with out self respect. Christie respect yourself enough to discipline yourself on your eating habits . Then I  may also do likewise unto you.

Really it is? You seem to be failing at the education part. And there are several surgeries that have helped hundreds of thousands of Morbidly Obese people leave normal lives. – ToddScheller

Please note, Todd, that I did not say that morbid obesity was “impossible” to undo. I stated that it was “difficult to undo”. That difficulty is mostly experienced by the patient, not the care giver.

So now you are trying to deny that Lap Band, Gastric-By-Pass, or a Gastric sleeve surgery exists? Who is the one bringing the idiocracy to the debate?

The answer to your second question is… you are, because your first question was pulled out of your ass. I denied no such thing. Those are all, indeed, existing surgeries, that can be effective, but they are not always successful, and they are not always tolerable for the patient. Just ask Rush Limbaugh. Call Rush’s show and ask him to tell you about his coast-to-coast-to-coast (West Palm Beach to Los Angles and  back to West Palm Beach), 21 hour flight, on April 28, 2009. He claimed, at the time, that he did it to burn a bunch of jet fuel in retrospective honor of Earth Day, that was a week earlier. If you buy that, I have a bridge…

Your “gibberish”, suggesting that I “deny that Lap Band, Gastric-By-Pass, or a Gastric sleeve” surgeries exist, explained here…

Don’t be surprised, doodaddio, if the word “fatist”, that you think is a clever new way to accuse someone of being prejudiced against people that suffer from obesity, doesn’t make into the American lexicon. It won’t. It sounds too similar to “fatest”. Intelligent people will think your new word is stupid, and won’t use it.

Well. What a potpourri of fantasies, nonsense, inaccuracies, and conspiracy theories you’ve managed to cram into one post. If it was a work of art, I’d praise you. But since I’m convinced it’s no more than a dump from the stew sloshing around in your head, I’ll just shake mine instead.

It’s clear you don’t get it, so let me explain: Mediaite is in the business of bringing people like you and me to this site so we can lock horns and maybe click on an ad or two. What they are *not* in the business of doing is taking silly advice from clueless and resentful posters regarding their editorial policy. Based on the comments that Mediaite’s staff occasionally post here, they are singularly unimpressed by outraged posters clamoring for the scalps of their respective bêtes noires.

So trash away. They don’t care. They don’t have to.

Nor is Mediaite here to advance the DNC’s agenda (or the RNC’s, for that matter). Without evidence, you ascribe Mediaite’s motives to liberal conspiracy (while I’d characterize their viewpoint as the traditionally gormless, false-equivalency, fence-sitting-because-we’re journalists fecklessness that afflicts most of the US media), but Mediaite’s credibility, such as it is, is not based on your idiosyncratic view of reality, but whether they can stay interesting enough to bring you and me back to the site and thereby keep their advertisers happy.

Trivial? Ideological? Embarassing? Maybe. Certainly the political news out of the US today is profoundly embarassing. But that embarassment covers the entire political spectrum — although one has to acknowledge that the most intensely embarassing stuff consistently comes from wingnutariat.

  • expatpatriot

Just in case you missed it: Governor Christie of New Jersey? He’s fat.

  • expatpatriot

I realize nuance is for sissies, but if you could lower yourself just once to indulge, you’d see that what the pundits are saying is that Christie’s weight affects his electability — more than his capability.

One way to be “unqualified for the presidency” is to not be elected to the presidency, for one reason or another. This will be Palin, Bachmann, and Perry’s fate.

In Christie’s case, the most likely reason for him to be unqualified is that he’s not actually running.

I read an article relating to what a FAT President would need to function — larger chairs, special medical equipment — wish I had not deleted the article. But being fat (let’s be real — he is fat) is unhealthy — and do you really want a President who is already in poor healt?  If he cannot be a “normal size” he would be an unhealthy specimen.  And, if you can’t take care of your health, what can you do?  Realizing that many people are overweight I would put my vote on the side of someone who cares how they look and takes care of their health.

  • Hagen619dj

Very well said.  I just knew some idiot would make an issue of Christie’s weight.  Everytime a GOP candidate makes alittle showing over the others…all the critizism comes into play.  What if he was in a wheelchair.  Would they be saying that it was too demanding for that person too.  Just watch all the critizism come about no matter who desides to be a candidate.  Just read Republicans are Liars below. Talk about racism…what is this called??

  • Hagen619dj

Well, it’s o.k. to dream, but that’s exactly what it is…………a dream!

  • Hagen619dj

See sir, we can.  He didn’t work on anything but the medical plan that HE and the DEMOs. wanted.  He is determined to have us have medical like the Canadian’s.  Have you ever heard what that is like?  I’ll bet not or you wouldn’t be thinking that he’s accomplished till now are so wonderful.  What president sues another state on illegal aliens? There are so many of these statis makers that you don’t seem to have a clue about.

  • Hagen619dj

So all you demos that shout racism are now going to shout prejudice??? Predictable.

  • Hagen619dj

Maybe we should try that… Every president gets a physical AFTER they are elected. They have the best doctors and medical care.  I think it would be great if EVERYONE had to have a urine test BEFORE they get on medcaid or welfare or food stamps.  Wouldn’t that be fair.  You democrats seem to think everyone needs to be taken care of.

Do you suppose Obam-man cares about smoking.   I mean, the proof is in the pudding that smoking is a detriment to your health.  Suppose that matters???  Does he require more medical care?  Oh shame, then he needs to be put out to pasture right away.  He’s a one-termer.  I’m glad.

RIGHT ON POINT but unfortunately most of these damn fool obama lovers would rather ignore the reality of your words…much easier to talk about someones weight or other silly non issues…By the way remember your wonderful President Roosevelt, did he have polio and was unable to walk un-assisted…Four terms and not a bad President…
