Disgraced Former Rep. Mark Foley Returns For Appearance With…Young Republicans
Oh, irony. Mark Foley, the Florida congressman who left his job in 2006 after reports he’d sent a series of sexually-charged emails to young men who were former Congressional pages, is back on the political scene. The Palm Beach Post reports Foley headlined a weekend meeting of Palm Beach County’s Young Republicans. The choice of Foley as a speaker for an audience of young people resulted in criticism when the announcement was made in Florida, with one critic turning to Twitter with the message “have you people lost your minds?”
But Young Republicans president Jackie Fay defended the choice, telling CNN the “speech was wonderful” and talked about the current crop of Republican freshmen in Washington. As for the criticism, she dismissed it as uncalled for:
“I thought it was incredibly close minded and petty,” Fay said of the negative response. “The man resigned from office, served his time away from the public eye and wasn’t demanding to be let back into everyone’s good graces, he seems to be accepting opportunities that are extended to him.
CNN reports Foley, who underwent treatment for alcoholism after his 2006 resignation from Congress, has recently begun hosting a radio show in Palm Beach. Is the Young Republicans’ speech a sign he’s ready to get back into public life? Foley told the Palm Beach Post, “It obviously feels good to have people care enough to ask me to do it.”
