Rep. Steve King Defends Calling President Obama “Very, Very Urban” On Anderson Cooper

video

Steve King John BoydRep. Steve King stopped by Anderson Cooper’s show tonight to discuss his case against the Pigford black farmer settlement—and to discuss semantics, in light of his comment about President Obama being “very, very urban.” When Cooper asked King what he meant by his remark, the representative answered that he was using the word “urban” in the literal sense, and that he had no idea it could ever be construed as a pejorative.

Here, specifically, is what King had to say in response to Cooper’s question:

“We had to go look this up and try to figure out how anybody could hyperventilate over calling the president a very urban, actually a very, very urban president, or a very urban senator at the time. He comes from a very urban area. It is not something that would ever occur to anybody in my background that that would be something that could be some kind of a racial pejorative. It’s just simply, he comes from the city, that’s urban. You come from the country, you’re rural.”

Cooper’s other guest—Dr. John Boyd, the founder of the National Black Farmers Association—took the opposite view, saying that King has been making comments with unsavory racial implications. Boyd did not, however, tell Cooper what he thought of King’s assessment of Obama’s urbanity. Video below.

The story is about Rep Steve King, yet the headline says Peter King. Different Congressman, please correct.

I took it upon myself to repost your comment above, and apply it to keith oldbermann’s brilliance this evening, figured since you didnt like the guy you wouldnt mind to much.

Look, Steve King is one of the more radical people in Congress and I would love nothing more than for him to be voted the hell out, but let’s give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

I look at it that he either had a poor choice of words, or that he should have clarified what he was talking about. I can understand the raised eyebrows on his comments, but I don’t think King is nutty enough to have meant what people think he implied.

  • Anthony

i’m black and i don’t think there was anything racial about the comment king made. i think he was simply saying obama is a “city boy” making legislation that affects rural people, and that’s the fact.

i’m not a fan of rep. king at all (he’s a little nutty), but let’s have an honest and candid debate in this country without false accusations.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Chris-Jones/1384303476 Chris Jones

What King said was completely accurate and had nothing to do with race. This is yet another attempt by the far left to distract from the fact that Pigford is nothing more than reparations in disguise. It’s despicable.

  • Dem4Ever

Just goes to show that Blacks don’t like White people calling them names and White people don’t like Blacks calling them names. End of story.

I dunno. I’d love to give him the benefit of the doubt, but how can you not think that’s an obvious code?

I have no way of knowing what was going on in his head but I do take what he said in context and connect it with what he has claimed about Obama’s racial prejudices in the past.

I do not give him the benefit of the doubt.

It goes to show you that white people don’t like being called racist by black people who push for $1.8 billion in reparations for “black farmers.” Or for black people who considered becoming farmers. Or for black people who once said the word farm.

    Here are the facts:

    – USDA and FBI officials estimate that the number of fraudulent claims ranges from 50 to 95 percent.

    – The original Pigford settlement was to compensate black farmers who were discriminated against by the USDA over loans. When the Pigford vs Glickman class action suit was filed in 1999 there were a total of 18,000 black farmers in America.

    – The number of people who have since filed claims and are expected to get a piece of the $1.8 billion payout has swelled to more than 94,000 people. That’s called fraud.

    – In the face of overwhelming evidence Democrats continue to deny any fraud exists.

Pigford is a perfect cause for Democrats and black poverty pimps like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Dr. John Boyd to push. All they have to do is call people opposed to it racist and black people will get paid.

Sorry, that’s not going to happen. The racism charge has been all used up. There’s no sting left. This is a brazen attempt by the hard left to get reparations for blacks.

Had the midterm elections turned out differently this attempted heist just might have worked. But we know how the elections turned out. I predict many if not most of those 94,000 people with outstretched hands are going to have to get a job after all. You know, like the rest of us.

Hell, they can’t. There’s a black man and his family living in the White House. They might as well bring back the days of Jim Crow and the KKK. The Republicans have all ready said their main priorty is to make Obama a one term President. Talk about putting Party before Country.

re-listen to the whole speach by kkking and you will see the context. when king says he is very very very very urban or newt is saying he is an anti-colonialist kenyan,..,.what theyre really saying is “n****r.”

sorry but its true, the rethuglican establishment can elect all the uncle toms they want, but it still doesnt change the facts. No, not all cons and rethugs are racist, but the people orchestrating the movement are.

King is completely right ..this thing has fraud written all over it (ACORN being involved being the first red flag)and of course it’s defenders are going to play the race card…but thankfully that card is so worn out it doesn’t work 1/2 the time…also comparing paying all these “Black farmers” is like reparations in that the people demanding the money were not slaves or in this case not farmers.

King doesn’t need to defend his remarks – Cooper et al need to apologize to King for making a mountain out of a molehill, and misconstruing King’s words into something they were never intended to be.

This is why CNN’s ratings are in the toilet – the public expects this kind of crap from MSNBC (and mediaite, unfortunately), but CNN is supposed to be a respectful organization and not gutter dive down into the depths of dirt where MSNBC lives.

The only racial comments I have heard made about Obama come from Jimmah (who actually did call hehimselftheone “boy”) Biden and Reid….of course, they are all democrats so the media never makes a big deal out of their commentary.

This pretty much does it for me and CNN; I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but with Cooper’s ignorance to even go there, he isn’t worth my time anymore.

What a bunch of race baiters and media whoremongers.

Remember all, it’s 2010 and 2 years into our post racial Presidency it’s absolutely racist to order black coffee, eat dark chocolate or reference black holes in outer space.

Face it kids, the Democrats have effectively decided that anyone anywhere anytime is in fact a racist, even though 99% of the American people just laugh it off anymore. It’s funny, because you’ll hear people in offices, stores, banks, bars, gas stations, virtually everywhere laugh out loud and make fun of it now.

Good job Dems, I’m sure the African American community is grateful for the giggles.

@TfT, “What a bunch of race baiters and media whoremongers.”

If Anderson is so concerned about blacks why is he wasting time on stories like this while ignoring the continuing problems in Haiti? Maybe it is because he can’t find a way to blame whites.

I don’t care one way or another about Steve King, but when it comes to race CNN and especially Anderson, continue to make mountains out of molehills, blowing everything out of proportion in a desperate attempt to get blogs like Mediaite to cover them in hopes of raising their dismal ratings.

If it has been proven that these black farmers were discriminated against then restitution should be made, but any suspicious claims should be investigated. CNN always tries to tie every black issue to slavery or racial discrimination. If they want to champion some ancient “injustice” why aren’t they complaining about what this country did to the Native American community or the Japanese Americans in WWII? They seem to only be concerned with issues affecting the black community.

Chances are Anderson is doing more of these types of stories to try to stir up interest in his new “talk show”. Controversy is the key to success in that market. Just ask Jerry Springer and Maury, Anderson’s new lightweight “competition”.

  • rocky road

More diversion from the far left. When they can’t argue, explain or defend their positions they scream Racism. It’s so old now that nobody cares about being called a racist because the majority of americans have been called racists by the left, the media and the dems for over two years. Jesse Jackson is a pimp. Drats.. Now I am a racist.

I know reality is a hard grasp for some folks, but I will try…..IF the stats put forth are correct. there most likely were 94,000 black farmers trying to get, for many years, the same govt assistance as was provided to the white farmers. By the time many failed, gave up and moved to the city for day labor jobs, probably there were only a fe thousand still on the farm. That doesn’t mean the ones who gave up waiting for the same help the whites got should be disregarded. They or their heirs are entitled to file for damages. Paste on the word reparations if you want to, but they were discriminated against and filed to get some justice….good for them. And bringing in the japanese? Weren’t they given a payout sometime in the last few years….? The black farmers started this after congress passed a bill giving them the money, but didn’t pass the bill to produce the money……. I don’t blame them. They must feel like Repugs, those loudmouths who make a big fuss when they think they have been ignored by their govt.

  • CAconservative

The original group of farmers that filed suit against the government has a legitimate claim. The rest are just a bunch of piling on parasites looking for free tax-paid handout.
