Stephen Colbert: Weiner’s Sadly Delicious Sordid Saga Proves Dems Don’t Share GOP Values
Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted yesterday that he had engaged only in inappropriate virtual relationships with a half dozen women, and never had physical relationships with any of them. This caught the attention of Stephen Colbert, who last night used this embarrassing chapter in Weiner’s life to exemplify the stark difference in values between Democrats and Republicans. In Colbert’s judgment, at least the GOP members caught in these sorts of scandal were trying to “hit that” and not solely engage in online chats as Weiner claimed. Different values!
Like The Daily Show that comes on before it, The Colbert Report typically tapes it show in the early evening, say 6:30ish, after its writers and producers spend the whole day crafting what they feel bits and sketches based on the top news of the day. Yesterday, however, when Rep. Weiner admitted to lying over “Weinergate” at 4:30pm (in what was surely one of the oddest press events ever) hosts Colbert and Jon Stewart were forced to improvise to some degree.
Unlike Stewart, who gave his old buddy caught in scandal a bit of a pass, Colbert showed off his facility for extemporaneous comedy last night in what was a far sharper and more complete sketch than that of The Daily Show before it.
