Trump Responds to Corker’s ‘Path to World War III’ Comment: ‘We’re On The Right Path Now’
President Donald Trump responded to Sen. Bob Corker’s criticism of him during a White House meeting with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger on Tuesday.
Corker, a Republican from Tennessee with whom Trump has been feuding with on Twitter, said in a stunningly candid interview with the New York Times that he thought the president’s rhetoric could put the U.S. “on the path to World War III.”
Trump was asked about those comments from the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by a reporter on Tuesday, and gave the following — very Trumpian — response:
“We were on the wrong path before. All you have to do is take a look. If you look over the last 25 years, through numerous administrations, we were on a path to a very big problem, a problem like this world has never seen. We’re on the right path right now, believe me.”
Trump tweeted about Corker earlier on Tuesday, claiming that the Times had set him up by recording his conversation with the paper.
Times reporter Jonathan Martin fact checked Trump on that point, tweeting that Corker was well-aware that the conversation was being recorded:
Corker had 2 aides on line, also recording, and they made sure after it ended that I was taping, too.
