Donald Trump continues to bellow about his border (or boarder?) wall, but even his most ardent defenders at Fox & Friends have declared it a lost cause. Like Walter Cronkite in 1968, only with less gravity and more absurdity, Curvy Coucher Steve Doocy has declared Trump’s quest for a border wall unwinnable.
On Wednesday morning’s edition of Fox & Friends, co-host Brian Kilmeade told White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, to her face, that Trump “has no leverage” in his pursuit of a border wall, and things actually got worse from there.
Later in the program, the trio of hosts was interviewing former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, and despite Gingrich’s insistence that Trump would prevail on the issue, the gang was decidedly unconvinced.
“Is it something that he just needs to give up on?” co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked Gingrich. “Because Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer are never going to barge. They’re not going to compromise. Maybe this was his opportunity to compromise, but if you can’t get it done now when Republicans have the House and the Senate, is he ever going to be able to do it?”
Gingrich replied that Trump “believes that every week that he’s talking about security for Americans, and they’re posturing against protecting the border, I think he thinks he’s probably winning in the long run.”
Then Doocy, after fumbling his phone, read a tweet from Trump that concluded “One way or the other, we will win on the Wall!”
“But realistically, Mr. Speaker, it looks like he has lost on the wall,” Doocy said. “Because unless he says no, I’m not going to sign that thing and there’s a government shutdown, there are a lot of people who heard him last week, who drew that line in the sand and said this is worth shutting down, and if there’s not a shutdown he’s going to look like a loser.”
Gingrich insisted that Trump can agree to a one or two week extension without losing the wall, but in two weeks, Democrats will control the House of Representatives.
When Fox & Friends says Trump has lost, it’s time for Trump to feel the fork that has been stuck in his quest for a border wall. It is done.
