Singer Grimes Refuses to Speak on Former Partner Elon Musk Acquiring Twitter: ‘I Should Not Have Opinions On This’
Grimes, pop star and former partner of Elon Musk, is refusing to speak about Twitter and the $44 billion dollar deal Musk made to buy the company.
On Friday’s episode of The Lex Fridman Podcast, she was asked about her thoughts on social media and Twitter, in particular.
Host Lex Fridman asked, “How would you fix Twitter? How would you fix social media? Like, you’re an optimist, you’re a positive person. There’s a bit of cynicism that you have currently about this particular little slice of humanity.”
“I’m not that cynical about it. I’m not that cynical about it. I actually refuse to be a cynic on principle. — I do think there’s a lot of issues with Twitter just in terms of the public mental health but due to my proximity to the current dramas, I honestly feel that I should not have opinions about this,” Grimes said. “I think if Elon ends up getting Twitter that is — being the arbiter of truth or public discussion, that is a responsibility.”
Grimes and Musk dated for over two years and have two children together named X and Y.
She continued, “I do not want to say something that might dismantle democracy. And so I actually think I should not have opinions about this because I’m truly not — I don’t want to have the wrong opinion about this. I think I’m too close to the actual situation wherein I should not. I have thoughts in my brain but I think I’m scared by my proximity to the situation.”
Fridman said, “Crazy, crazy world we live in! It’s worthwhile to consider that a responsibility and to take it seriously. Sometimes, just like you did, choose silence. Choose, sort of, respectful –”
Grimes jumped in to clarify, “I do have a lot of thoughts on the matter. If my thoughts are wrong, this is one situation where the stakes are high.”
