Report: Federal Investigators Request Criminal Probe of Hillary Clinton’s Emails

hillary clintonThe State Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence inspector generals have reportedly requested that the Department of Justice open a criminal probe into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton‘s emails.

At issue appears to be Clinton’s use of private email to handle classified information. The New York Times, which broke the news Thursday night, reports that, “The request follows an assessment in a June 29 memo by the inspectors general for the State Department and the intelligence agencies that Mrs. Clinton’s private account contained ‘hundreds of potentially classified emails.’”

Clinton claimed in March that she had never sent any classified emails from her private email account. “I did not email any classified material to anyone on my email,” she said. “There is no classified material. So I’m certainly well aware of the classification requirements and did not send classified material.”

Clinton spokesperson Nick Merrill responded Friday morning that, “Contrary to the initial story, which has already been significantly revised, she followed appropriate practices in dealing with classified materials.” (What he left off was that the story had been “significantly revised” because of pressure from the Clinton camp).
