McCain: ‘Almost Speechless’ at Report of What Trump Told Russians About Comey

Senator John McCain said this morning he’s “almost speechless” at the report of what President Trump said to top Russian officials about James Comey.

He has used the word “scandal” recently in talking about where the Russia investigation is going, and McCain told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday this morning, “With the appointment of Mr. Mueller, we’ve now hit that stage of a scandal.”

Wallace also asked McCain why he thinks Trump fired the FBI director. The Arizona senator said, “I don’t know. Honestly, I cannot explain a lot of the president’s actions. I don’t think it was a wise thing to do. Mr. Comey was highly respected and highly regarded. And so I can’t explain it. I don’t think it was a smart thing to do.”

As for the report that Trump told the Russian ambassador and foreign minister that Comey was a “nut job” and the “great pressure” he’s faced over Russia has been eased, McCain had this to say:

“I don’t know how to read it except that… I’m almost speechless because I don’t know why someone would say something like that.”

National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster––whom McCain has praised in the past––said on ABC this morning that the president was conveying that he “feels as if he’s hamstrung in his ability to work with Russia, to find areas of cooperation, because this has obviously been so much in the news.”
