Morning Joe Crew Hails Dick Cheney’s ‘Third Act’ – Warning Trump Can ‘Never Be Trusted’

Morning Joe hosts hailed late former vice president Dick Cheney on Tuesday as someone who “kept his bearings” during President Donald Trump’s political rise and for warning that Trump can “never be trusted” while “many others” in the GOP “lost their way.”

The take came moments after Cheney’s death late Monday was announced in a public statement by his family. He died “due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease” and left behind his wife Lynne, two daughters, and six grandchildren.

Reflecting on Cheney’s legacy, host Joe Scarborough argued that the late Republican “lived his life” in “three acts”: first as a “respected voice in Congress”, post 9/11 as “Darth Vader” for former President George W. Bush’s “war on terror” and, finally, as a key conservative voice opposing Trump.

The host defended Cheney’s post-9/11 legacy and said it showed he was “determined from that moment on, after 9/11, there would never be another 9/11 again. And he was going to do whatever he could to stop it.”

“But he also is seeing reports day in and day out that would have scared the absolute hell out of any American that had access to all the threats,” he continued.

Scarborough added: “And then finally, the third act. Of course, one of these Republicans, you know, was seen as a defender of democracy. When so many others lost their way, Dick Cheney kept his bearings after January the 6th, always kept his bearings when it came to Democratic norms. And he was on the right side. I think most certainly Republicans from my era would believe, and I think we’re all we all should be grateful to him for that.”

Interjecting, host Willie Geist said: “One of his last public acts was about a year ago, when he put out a statement saying, I’m going to be voting for Kamala Harris in this presidential election.”

“Dick Cheney, Darth Vader, as you said, the face of the Republican party in many ways in the Bush years,” he continued. “Said Donald Trump can never be trusted with power again, appearing with his daughter, Liz Cheney, of course, who was one of the most outspoken voices against the Trump administration.”
