‘Not What You Wanted to See’: Fox Host Presses Trump Labor Secretary on Jobs Report

Fox Business’ Stuart Varney pressed Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer on why manufacturing jobs fell in the latest jobs report despite President Donald Trump’s aggressive push to create more domestic manufacturing positions.

On a Friday interview, Varney told Chavez-DeRemer she’s “got to be pleased” with the latest jobs report, which showed that 139,000 jobs were added, beating expectations by many economists. Chavez-DeRemer said the administration is “exceeding expectations.”

Varney pointed to one problem in the jobs report and that’s the loss of 8,000 manufacturing jobs. The month-to-month loss comes as Trump continually boasts that his widespread tariffs will lead to a boom in manufacturing within the United States.

“Now 8,000 manufacturing jobs were lost in May, that’s not what you wanted to see,” Varney said.

Chavez-DeRemer insisted that manufacturing jobs are “holding steady.”

“We’re certainly holding steady. And under the Trump administration, manufacturing jobs are still up over what the last administration under Biden had. The focus of my America at Work Tour is to increase those manufacturing jobs. And we’ll continue to stay laser focused on that as the president continues to double down on how important this is to the American economy,” she said.

“But how come we’re losing 8,000 manufacturing jobs in May, and when there’s a big push to bring manufacturing jobs back to America, how come were losing those jobs?” Varney pressed further.

Chavez-DeRemer again said things are holding steady and insisted more growth can be expected in manufacturing as the administration emphasizes such careers for young workers.

“We’re certainly holding steady, and as we increase construction jobs, as we increase health care jobs, and again, that focus on building those manufacturing plants, it will take some time,” she said. “The president has done a wonderful job in negotiating the level playing field as far as the tariff discussions have gone, but those on-shoring of those jobs, we’re seeing tens of trillions of dollars being reinvested here in the United States. And I’ll continue to focus on that skilled workforce as those manufacturing jobs continue to grow.”
