Anti-Obama ‘Entrepreneurs’ Co-Opt Amusing Political Billboard Movement
Uh-oh: someone took those George W. Bush “Miss Me Yet?” billboards seriously. After a group of small business owners saw something funny on the internet and decided to make it a confusing ad looming over a Minnesota highway, anti-Obama advocates are launching an organized campaign to fill the skies with slogans like “Stop the Lies!” and “If You’re Not Outraged, You’re Not Paying Attention.” In other words, BillboardsAgainstObama.com is the new Ron Paul Blimp.
The new billboards began to appear over Atlanta, Georgia, and this time, the group of small business owners didn’t waste any time identifying themselves and promoting their cause. According to NBC News 11 in Atlanta, they have hired local conservative motivational speaker Tommy Newberry as their spokesman, who commented to NBC 11:
“There’s a group of entrepreneurs, small business owners, that have frankly just said, ‘we’ve had enough’ and they’re taking the gloves off… [they asked themselves] ‘why don’t we use the free market to help slow the slide into socialism?’”
An unfortunate turn of events, surely, for those who first put up the billboards as a way to point out how ridiculous and overheated attacks from both sides have become. Though if it’s any consolation, a read-through of their website makes it seem like the billboards are not a real political movement, but an online get-rich-quick scheme, since the only thing one can do on it is donate money. Here is their mission statement:
Do you love freedom? Do you love independence? Do you value the opportunity in the United States to work hard, take risks, and succeed? If the current administration completes the process they are racing to achieve, all of this will be gone! To stop the madness, we must speak out now. BILLBOARDS AGAINST OBAMA is a practical and effective way to join the battle, be seen, be heard, before it’s too late!
According to the website, about 0% of this money will go towards funding anti-Obama Congressional campaigns in this fall’s midterm elections, and another 0% will go towards advocacy, lobbying, and PACs. “Practical and effective,” indeed! Where do I sign up?
