Christian Bakery Refuses to Make Bert and Ernie Cake
A bakery in Northern Ireland could be facing legal action after its owners refused to make a cake for the group QueerSpace Belfast featuring the characters Bert and Ernie from Sesame Street along with the message “Support Gay Marriage.”
The group was ultimately able to hire another bakery to execute the design, as seen below:

Now, the Equality Commission of Northern Ireland is threatening to take legal action against Asher’s Baking Company, claiming it violated that country’s laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation. Unless the bakery responds with “proposals to remedy your unlawful discrimination” within seven days, the commission said it would begin court proceedings.
In a video response via The Christian Institute, a member of the McArthur family, which owns Asher’s Baking Company, defends his business’ decision to refuse service to the gay rights organization because the requested order was “at odds with our beliefs” and “in contradiction with what the Bible teaches.”
Unlike the rest of the United Kingdom, same-sex marriage is not legal in Northern Ireland.
