CNN’s Cuomo, John Avlon Praise Selection of Giuliani For Trump’s Legal Team: POTUS ‘Needs His Expertise’
John Avlon, editor in chief of the Daily Beast and CNN political analyst, spent years working as a speechwriter for Rudy Giuliani — back when he was mayor of New York City. And from Avlon’s perspective, the addition of Giuliani to President Donald Trump‘s legal team is a wise move.
CNN’s Chris Cuomo, likewise, noted on New Day Friday the advantages for Trump of bringing the former mayor on board.
“Rudy Giuliani knows Bob Mueller, is respected by Bob Mueller, and knows this system of investigation better than everyone else the president has involved to this point,” the anchor said.
Avlon noted that Giuliani, given his lengthy experience in the Justice Department, is “uniquely positioned as somebody who has the confidence of the president and [special counsel] Bob Mueller.”
“Two opposite ends of this major fight,” Avlon said. “Someone who can bridge that perhaps.”
“Rudy is an institutionalist, he can actually calm some of the passions, and hopefully make this whole conversation less frayed and more focused on resolution,” Avlon added.
Cuomo agreed that Giuliani can serve as a moderating influence of sorts for Trump.
“The idea that when somebody tells [Trump], ‘You need to slow down. You need to rethink this.’ That’s a very, very small group of people,” Cuomo said. “Rudy Giuliani is one of the people who are in that group.”
Cuomo noted that Giuliani’s rebukes of Trump have sometimes hurt him politically, “but now [Trump] needs his expertise.”
CNN legal analyst Laura Coates, on the other hand, argued that Giuliani won’t be able to influence Mueller in the least.
“The fact that he is respected, perhaps, and is able to advise the president of the United States speaks nothing to whether he can advise Robert Mueller — who I’m sure is more than capable of compartmentalizing his personal interactions with people, and his role in this probe.”
