The Secret Service confirmed tonight that an envelope containing cyanide was sent to the White House.
According to an alert obtained by The Intercept, the envelope was inside a container “wrapped in a plastic bag,” and it was examined at the White House mail screening facility on Sunday. The individual who sent it has reportedly sent many suspicious packages to the White House for over a decade, but the Secret Service has not yet provided an update on what they know about this person.
The Secret Service statement on the envelope said a test Monday came back negative, but a second one returned positive results for cyanide.
Update- 4:25 pm EST: It turns out the substance inside was spit. Why did they think it was cyanide? Well:
The sender is believed to be a homeless man from the Chicago area who apparently smokes excessively, producing trace amounts of cyanide in his saliva, according to sources familiar with the case.
