What would the 4th of July be without Nathan’s hotdog eating contest? Actually I can think of plenty of answers to that question that don’t involve inhaling (almost literally) hot dogs, nevertheless it is a tradition that plenty of people hold dear.
In recent years the contest, held earlier today at Coney Island was apparently a rivalry between “No. 1 in the world, American Joey Chestnut, who claimed a record last year by eating 68 hot dogs with buns (HDBs) in 10 minutes to take the win, and Japanese eating sensation Takeru Kobayashi, ranked No. 3.” The things you learn from Google!
Kobayashi did not officially participate this year (more on that in a moment) and (spoiler alert!) Chestnut won easily! For the fourth consecutive time. Watch below. Meanwhile, according to the AP, Kobayashi, who was watching from the crowd and “who has not signed a contract with Major League Eating to be free to compete in contests sanctioned by other groups…went on stage after the competition. Police officers grabbed him, and he tried to hold onto police barricades as they took him into custody.” Sounds like a regular Fourth at Coney Island!
