White House Correspondents Association: ‘Americans Should Recoil’ at Trump ‘Cheerleading’ Gianforte Attack
The White House Correspondents Association has issued a statement denouncing President Donald Trump‘s comments last night about Congressman Greg Gianforte‘s (R-MT) bodyslamming of a reporter in 2016.
Trump joked around at his rally last night about Gianforte’s assault of Ben Jacobs, even saying that “any guy that can do a body slam is my kind of guy.”
And people in the audience cheered.
White House Correspondents Association president Olivier Knox put out a statement denouncing the President’s remarks:
All Americans should recoil from the president’s praise for a violent assault on a reporter doing his Constitutionally protected job. This amounts to the celebration of a crime by someone sworn to uphold our laws and an attack on the First Amendment by someone who has solemnly pledged to defend it. We should never shrug at the president cheerleading for a violent act targeting a free and independent news media.
