Donald Trump has “never been a conservative,” according to Bill O’Reilly.
In a conversation with American Conservative executive director Curt Mills, O’Reilly claimed Trump “couldn’t care less about conservative thought.”
“Donald Trump’s not a conservative. You know that, and if you don’t, read my book The United States of Trump. He’s never been a conservative. He couldn’t even tell you what the conservative philosophy is. He’s a dealmaker, but his supporters are largely right and ultra-right. They love him. Does it bother you as the director of The American Conservative that Trump isn’t really conservative?” O’Reilly asked his guest on his No Spin News show.
“Do you think he’s not nationalist or populist or center right though?” Mills responded.
O’Reilly argued Trump is “center right” for “practical reasons.” He praised his right-leaning Supreme Court picks and claimed those judges are “saving the country right now.” The former Fox News host claimed Hillary Clinton winning in 2016 and appointing liberal judges to the court would have had far worse consequences.
Trump nominated Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett to their positions on the Supreme Court. Multiple controversial opinions have dropped since then, the most consequential being the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
“I think he’s populist. I think he’s center right for practical reasons,” O’Reilly said about Trump. “Best thing that Trump did in his four years outside of running the economy efficiently was the appointments to the Supreme Court. If Hillary Clinton had won the election, she would have loaded it up with liberal judges, and you think it’s bad now in the neighborhoods? What’s happening to New York City right as we speak because I’m here would be happening all over the country if Hillary Clinton had won and appointed those Supreme Court Justices.”
