Trump Warns U.S. ‘Will Devastate Turkey Economically if They Hit Kurds’ in Syria

President Donald Trump said the United States will “devastate Turkey economically” if the country attacks Kurdish fighters in Syria.

In a Sunday evening tweet, the president wrote that he is “Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard, and from many directions.”

“Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds,” Trump continued. “Likewise, do not want the Kurds to provoke Turkey.”

Trump also appeared to propose a 20 mile safe zone on the Turkey-Syria border so as to prevent clashes between the Turkish military and Kurdish fighters in northern Syria.

“Stop the ENDLESS WARS!” he added.

When Trump first announced that the United States would be withdrawing its troops from Syria in 30 days, there were fears such a move would open up Kurdish fighters — who are combatting ISIS in northern Syria with the help of the United States — to an assault by Turkey.

Several weeks later, national security adviser John Bolton said the withdrawal will have a longer timeline, and will not be undertaken until Kurdish fighters are protected and ISIS is defeated in the war-torn country.
