Morning Joe: If Trump Gets Roy Moore Elected, GOP Becomes ‘Party of Pedophiles’
A Morning Joe panel on Wednesday warned President Donald Trump against supporting Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, who has been accused by a number of women of sexual misconduct when they were underaged.
MSNBC’s Willie Geist first reacted to Trump’s quasi-endorsement of Moore, in which the president said Moore “totally denies” the allegations.
“You have the president of the United States now saying clearly and out loud he takes the side of Roy Moore,” Geist said. “He takes the word of Roy Moore versus the word of the nine accusers.”
Geist then tried to appeal to Trump with a different argument:
“So if your moral code doesn’t dictate that you come out strongly against someone who’s been accused of these things, maybe a political, strategic argument would prevail on the president. Which is that: you win this seat, this Senate seat for Roy Moore, it’s a Pyrrhic victory, because you will be saddled — as you all have just said — as the party of a pedophile for the rest of Roy Moore’s term. And by the way, the president will be saddled with that…you stood up in this moment of truth, you stood up and took the side of an accused pedophile.”
Co-host Joe Scarborough added he thinks that Moore is likely to still lose the Alabama senate election to Democratic opponent Doug Jones, despite Trump’s support.
MSNBC analyst John Heilemann called that scenario the “worst of all worlds” for the Republican party: “you lose the seat, and in the process of losing it you’ve become the party of pedophiles.”
