Politico’s Jonathan Martin Predicts When Trump Will Dump Musk
Politico journalist Jonathan Martin predicted that Americans might see President Donald Trump dump his cost-cutting bulldog Elon Musk as soon as “this summer or this fall” as he grows “tired” of the billionaire’s “antics” and “unpopularity.”
The take comes as polling suggests that Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting measures within the federal government are losing favor with the public.
A Washington Post–Ipsos poll found that 49 percent disapprove of Musk’s management of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with particular concern over granting DOGE staffers unprecedented access to sensitive government databases.
Similarly, a CNN–SSRS poll revealed that only 28 percent of Americans view Musk’s role in the government as beneficial, while a Quinnipiac poll found that 55 percent believe he holds too much power.
Speaking to MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Tuesday, Martin made a bold prediction that the shift in polls would mark the beginning of Trump’s disenchantment.
[Musk’s] trying to do what he did for Tesla, for SpaceX, obviously for Twitter, and trying to apply that to the federal government. It’s a very different scenario here and it’s not going to go as well. Here’s where I think it ends.
I think Trump eventually is gonna get tired of Elon’s a) antics, but b) his unpopularity. If you look at the polling data so far, something that Trump cares deeply about, Trump’s numbers are a lot better than Elon Musk’s.
Trump doesn’t like somebody who’s that unpopular around him. And I think once Trump realizes the depth of Elon’s unpopularity, whether it’s this summer or this fall, I think his days are gonna be numbered.
