Miss Oklahoma Opines On Arizona Immigration Law, Comes Out Unscathed

video

Where have you gone Carrie Prejean? Our nation turns its lonely eyes to you. During last night’s Miss USA pageant, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was asked by actor Oscar Nunez (from NBC’s The Office for her thoughts on the controversial. Arizona Immigration law.) In a rather remarkable turn, Woolard made clear her support of the anti-illegal immigration law in a nuanced and unoffensive way. Perhaps she should run for office?

Woolard offered: “I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America. So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law.” And just to make sure she didn’t become the next conservative pariah (a la Prejean), she added a tolerant, if not banal, bon mot at the end, saying that she was “against racial profiling.”

Colby, it’s an anti-ILLEGAL immigration law. Why do you guys insist on leaving the illegal part out? We aren’t against immigration, just want people to follow the law. Is that really so hard to understand? And I didn’t find it remarkable, since a majority of American’s agree with her.

  • Colby Hall

good point michelle. fixed. btw, what’s remarkable is that – given the number of youtube moments that have come from these sorts of questions, what I found remarkable was that she didn’t muff the response.

  • ImNotBlue

Yes Colby. Not all attractive women are airheads. We’ve all learned something today.

    Way to go Miss Oklahoma!!

You know by now that the Austin, Texas city council has boycotted Arizona. Texas has no state-wide elected democrats, but for whatever reason, Austin is a magnet for them. Austin won’t be hurting Arizona all that much financially, but I sure would like to hurt Austin’s tax-base by not shopping within the city limits and encouraging folks that want to vacation or have business in Austin to stay in local hotels in Pflugerville, Round Rock, Buda, Cedar Park, etc.

There is a Facebook Group called: Boycott Austin, Texas

Please consider joining and spreading the message. There is a lot of useful information there as well such as contact numbers for the Austin Council.

  • writer

It won’t help. Anything short of saying Arizona should be expelled from the union will land her a spot on Olbermann’s worst persons list.

Go Arizona. I will try to go there this year.

  • The Real Royal King

Now, Blower, the last thing Arizona really needs at this point is a threat.

  • The Real Royal King

As regards the Austin City Council action, of which, as an Austinite, I am extremely proud, you should note that Austin acted in some measure for the same reason as Los Angeles, to-wit: a significant number of elected officials and employees are Hispanic. That means that in Phoenix they will be subjected to all of the dangers inherent in racial profiling. In acting on principle, Austin also acted in the best interest of its officials and employees. Can’t top that!

  • MichelleF

That means that in Phoenix they will be subjected to all of the dangers inherent in racial profiling.

I think it means that can’t read and don’t know what the law says.

You ought to look at why Austin is a “magnet” which, by the way, as are San Antonio, Laredo and El Paso, which are heavily Democratic, and Dallas, which “flipped” several election cycles, and Houston, which “flipped” recently. The demographic shift, well-educated and affluent young adults and a burgeoning Hispanic population.

You also ought to note that the Republican majority in the state House is now only +1. I’d get prepared for more seismic shifts in Texas, soon.

By the way, Austin is also a sanctuary city.

  • The Real Royal King

Sorry, Michelle. The tea has lost its kick. Time for a new bag. The law, in the hands of Arizona law enforcement personnel, is dangerous for anyone with a decent tan. It’s just the reality.

  • MichelleF

    King,
Just because you say something is reality, doesn’t make it so.

  • Chudi

California has the exact same law as Arizona, so I’m wondering when those morons in SF and LA will start boycotting themselves.

You know better than to say that! Because King said it, of course it’s true!

You still think you’re living in the “real world.” King isn’t talking to us from there… he’s in his own world, we just need to get used to it, and accept the “facts” as he portrays them. Reality ain’t nuthin’, if King doesn’t approve it first!

  • Jerrysays

So the AZ law is that bad, eh? How do the Feds handle illegal immigrants?

    The Nation
No Need for a Warrant, You’re an Immigrant

DIFFERENT RULES A federal raid aimed at illegal immigrants in Long Island last month angered local officials who objected to the lack of warrants.

LONG ISLAND officials protested when federal agents searching for immigrant gang members raided local homes two weeks ago. The agents had rousted American citizens and legal immigrants from their beds in the night, complained Lawrence W. Mulvey, the Nassau County police commissioner, and arrested suspected illegal immigrants without so much as a warrant.

“We don’t need warrants to make the arrests,” responded Peter J. Smith, the special agent in charge in New York for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, the agency that conducted the raids.

Immigration agents are not required to obtain warrants to detain suspects. The agents also have broad authority to question people about their immigration status and to search them and their homes. There are no Miranda rights that agents must read when making arrests.

“Immigration law enforcement is all about getting you to where you belong, which is outside the United States,” said Jan C. Ting, a law professor at Temple University who is a former assistant commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the precursor to ICE. He pointed out that immigration laws are civil codes, not criminal. “A lot of constitutional protections that one would normally expect in a criminal case do not necessarily apply,” he said.

Professor Ting says ICE agents are well within their authority to question people they come across in the course of a raid, even if they are not its targets, and detain them as suspects.

I heard on of the LA Councilman talking about all of the civil rights abuses going on right now in Arizona under their new anti-illegal immigration law. Wow, if there are civil rights abuses now under the law, imagine what will happen after the law goes into effect.

By the way, would someone tell trrk that a law can not be held to be Unconstitutional in its enforcement until after it is enforced and the Supreme Court agrees to hear the case. So, first the law has to take effect, it hasn’t yet. Then it has to be abused in a way the the Court decides is worthy of a hearing. None of this has happened yet. Then the court will have to decide whether those who have no right to be here have a right to hide while they are here.

  • silkworm

The eventual winner, Miss Michigan answered in basically the same way. Each thought the law was correct. Unlike the news media and fools, we are finding out that most people believe it to be just.

  • MichelleF

    Rich,
I think King left the building.

  • RichS

Shrug, he is just fun to poke and prod. Maybe I shouldn’t do it.

When I was a boy growing up in College Point, Queens there was a guy called Dougie who was always around. College Point was a rough and tumble factory town. Dougie was always around, he would go to the Bohack and A&P with his wagon and carry groceries home for the house wives to make money. Lots of us kids would do that but it was understood that Dougie got first call and no one was to bother him. Sometimes gangs from Flushing, or Corona came into the Point to cause trouble and they always went limping home. Even they understood that Dougie was not to be bothered. I’m not sure what was wrong with him perhaps it was MS or something akin to that. Anyway, it gave me a tradition of being protective of the afflicted. So, I do sometimes feel guilty about poking and proding pompus assholes like trrk but then I say, what the f**k and I do it anyway

  • felixw

These beauty contestants never learn. Someone should tell them that liberal views are rewarded by the judges, while conservative views are penalized. It’s easy to remember — it’s the exact same criteria used by the mainstream media in deciding the newsworthiness of a story. Before she opens her mouth, Miss Oklahoma just needs to ask herself: “Would Keith Olbermann express this view.” And if the answer is no, she simply must keep her opinion to herself.

  • OxyCon

She didn’t win, so how do you know she “came out unscathed”. Latino judge Oscar Nunez could have rated her answer, in which she supports Arizona, low costing her the crown.

And lucky for her there’s no raging homosexual pageant official like Keith Lewis to wage his own personal war against her.

INB brought up a good point earlier which I’ll direct to the King. King, since you evidently are sympathetic to people entering the country illegally, do you feel the same way about people entering your house illegally? Do you leave your doors unlocked and post signs saying ‘come on in’, or do you ‘protect your borders’? And if you do lock your doors and don’t want people entering illegally, aren’t you being a hypocrite?

Support “Legal Only” Immigration. Let’s welcome legal immigrants with a hand of friendship. Let’s put the illegals immigrants in the back of the line.

Shame on the Politian that wants to let these law breakers in the front of the line. In front of those who are doing the right thing. Shame on the Politian who does not protect our borders against illegal border entry. Some of which are murders, drugs dealers and possible terrorists. These Politian’s must be voted out of office. Yes, John McCain, you are in that group that must go. It is too late to redeem yourself now that the polls show border enforcement is popular. You showed your true colors when you drafted a crap immigration bill with Dead Kennedy. Bye bye!!!

Liberial as always are on the wrong side on immigration. Liberals make poor choices and bad decisions. It is a compete inability to differentiate right from wrong. Liberals lack character and common sense. It is truly sad. In addition, Liberals are foolish, unethical, immoral, corrupt and dishonest,

    AmericanCowboy,

I’m liberal, and I agree with at least part of your post. I am for legal immigration and anti-illegal immigration. I don’t think it’s fair to penalize those who have immigrated to the US legally and have done everything right. I support ways to control our borders against criminals. Canada, for example, has tighter border control than the U.S. and it doesn’t seem to devolve into a kind of racial profiling debate for them. It shouldn’t in our case, either.

What has to be done, in my opinion, is a stronger broader approach. That would include looking across our borders at our neighbors and their immigration policies and emigration policie(should not) solely fall on American shoulders.

So, to answer your call, liberals are not always on the wrong side of immigration. Don’t lump us all together. We are not brainwashed into always following the party line or pandering to PC ideology (that would be mindless, no?).

As for the rest of your post, it seems to crater off into a rant against liberals and an ad hom attack.
