Mediaite has exclusively obtained this note sent from Dan Abrams to the staff of his sites about their traffic numbers. Well actually, it ended up in our inbox and we just thought it was pretty cool.

There are very few things Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek could add to his resume that would make him even more beloved in the eyes of Americans, and yet he has outdone himself– this weekend, Trebek embarked on some hardcore crime-fighting, and while he tore his Achilles tendon, the culprit who broke into his hotel room and stole some money and jewelry was nearly immediately caught.

In a scandal the likes of which would be gradually and delicately revealed over the course of his new novel (yes, I read it and, yes, I quite enjoyed it), it appears that Steve Martin has been caught up in an art forgery scandal. Our friends over at Gossip Cop have confirmed the story with a “a source close to the comedian.” Presumably Martin would have talked about the case himself but, every time he tries, people get bored and send up notes asking him to do quotes from The Jerk instead.

Congratulations to our sister site Gossip Cop who, according to Variety, have inked a deal to create a television pilot for their own unique brand of celebrity and entertainment gossip. The show will be co-produced by former VH1 programming chief Michael Hirschorn (and his production company Ish) in conjunction with the Gossip Cop team of Michael Lewittes and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams.

Well, it looks like we won’t get to see a sexy, winking dance set to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You” starring Christine O’Donnell after all (seriously, you know this would have happened). Our friends at Gossip Cop have gotten the exclusive confirmation that O’Donnell will be sitting out this season of Dancing with the Stars. Damn. Now I guess I won’t watch Dancing with the Stars.*

*That statement has nothing to do with Christine O’Donnell being on it and entirely to do with the fact that it’s Dancing with the Stars.

Hollywood Life, a website covering celebrity gossip for a female audience – describing itself as “Your Celebrity News, Gossip & Style BFF” – is weighing in on Logan’s attack, asking whether it was “irresponsible” of Logan, a mother of two, to “put herself” in such a situation. Gossip Cop, which devotes itself to “busting bad dish,” noted the incongruity of a site catering to women essentially placing blame a female victim of sexual assault.

Remember how Us Weekly‘s website published a story about Sarah Palin trashing Christina Aguilera over her Super Bowl performance? And how it turned out to be a story fabricated for a satirical site? And Us Weekly almost immediately scrubbed the story? ‘Course you do. Well, evidently, Time doesn’t, because they repeated the exact same story.

Score one more for Sarah Palin in her fight against the “Lamestream Media”: Celebrity gossip source Us Weekly published a story about the former Alaska governor that included quotations originally fabricated for a satirical news piece. According to Gossip Cop, SuperTuesdayNews.com came up with some Palin quotes for a post about her “reaction” to Christina Aguilera‘s mangling of the national anthem during last weekend’s Super Bowl.

Last week the media offered a terrific feel-good story: the sudden transformation of the so-called “Golden Voiced Homeless Man” from the streets of Columbus, Ohio to mainstream media star making appearances on Today and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (among other notable programs.) Some wondered if the sudden fame brought to the viral video sensation would be a storm that Williams could weether, or if he would soon end up in trouble. Well according to Mediaite’s sister site Gossip Cop, it appears that the good times may have already come to an end for Mr. Williams.

Gossip Cop, our celebrity-lovin’ sister site, gave us a peek at its 2010 numbers, to which we immediately reacted by murmuring “no one likes a show off” over our hot cup of coffee. It’s entertainment and gossip! How hard could that be? Then we actually took a look at how the numbers compared to those of several major tabloids and entertainment news shows. And we were impressed. And more than a little pensive. What did this mean for the nature of celebrity gossip and the way readers – both of print and online publications – and TV viewers consume their celebrity news?

So the whole Charlie Sheen debacle this week is about to get just a little sleazier.

You see, that “escort” locked in the bathroom isn’t an escort at all. She’s a porn star, Capri Anderson, and as she gets lawyered up, get ready for her to step into the media spotlight!

Star magazine—incidentally, one of the tabloids most likely to print false information—is reporting that cancer-stricken Michael Douglas has frozen his sperm, allegedly so that he can give wife Catherine Zeta-Jones the “final gift” of a baby before he dies.

Gossip Cop reports MTV host and BMX star T.J. Lavin is in coma after a stunt at the Dew Tour event in Las Vegas went tragically wrong. After losing control of his bike on a dirt ramp, Lavin hit the ground without his bike and stopped moving. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he’s in “critical condition.

Rick Sanchez may be out of a job, but he’s still playing a starring role as the butt of the joke. Gossip Cop reports that at a New York fundraiser last night Jon Stewart, whom Sanchez infamously called a “bigot” last week, took a swipe at the now-fired CNN anchor.

In what may be one of the most awkward names since the launch of Mediaite.com, Mediaite has learned that Jay McGraw, son of Dr. Phil, is preparing to launch Rumorfix.com, a site whose mission sounds eerily similar to our cousin site GossipCop.com (Mediaite founder Dan Abrams also co-founded Gossip Cop). Mcgraw has teamed up with television producer Richard Ayoub to create the site which they call the “anti-tabloid.”

Under the headline, “Exclusive: Ashton Kutcher Caught Cheating on Demi Moore!” Star magazine writes, “Just five years after getting married, the couple’s relationship is in danger of falling apart as… the actor was caught cheating with a sexy, young 20-something.”

When it comes to the celebrity gossip machine, few stories can catch fire like Hollywood pregnancy rumors. That’s why the blog Hollywood Life’s front page currently features a headline screaming, “Are They Pregnant?” along with pictures of Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner sporting what maybe possibly sorta could somewhat be construed as looking the tiniest bit like baby bumps.

The upcoming 30th season of “Entertainment Tonight” will be the last for host Mary Hart. “I only meant to be at ‘ET’ for three years, suddenly it’s almost 30,” she said in a statement. “I’ve reached a point when I clearly realize it’s time for a change.” Who would you like to see replace Hart?

This time last year, a new kind of gossip site hit the web. Gossip Cop, co-founded by Michael Lewittes and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams, was created with the mission of policing celebrity news and rumors — or “busting bad dish.” The site factchecks sites ranging ranging from Perez Hilton and TMZ to magazines like Life & Style and Star. In light of this anniversary, we spoke to Lewittes about how the site’s first year has been, where it’s headed — and how it’s made both friends and enemies in a short time.

The writers at Life & Style are back with more of their truth stretching antics. First, they fabricated a story about Sandra Bullock and Jesse James getting back together, and now, they are claiming that Katie Holmes is expecting her second child. Luckily, Gossip Cop was there to call out both stories as big fat phonies.

Interesting news from our friends at Gossip Cop. It appears that Lindsay Lohan will be appearing on the October cover of Vanity Fair and that the issue will also feature an interview that Lohan gave shortly before her incarceration. The interview is apparently very candid and deals with all the pressing issues in the troubled star’s life including her legal problems.

Fact: Sandra Bullock is fluent in German. Fabrication: Sandra Bullock is reuniting with her now ex-husband Jesse James, and no matter how much Life & Style tries to prove this falsity is factual, it’s still not true, according to a piece just posted on GossipCop.com.

When you think of alleged Tiger Woods mistresses (all 14+), Donald Trump isn’t exactly the next thing that comes to mind. And yet, low and behold, there is a connection! Today, alleged mistress and Extra special nightlife correspondent Rachel Uchitel has confirmed to Gossip Cop that she received a personal invitation from Mr. Trump to appear on the next season of Celebrity Apprentice and, pending a final okay from NBC, will accept.

This week marks the one year anniversary of the launch of Mediaite, and what a year it has been. As Dan Abrams notes, predictions of Mediaite’s doom were greatly exaggerated, and as Mediaite columnist and White House reporter from Day One, I have viewed the site’s successful first year from a unique perch. When Rachel Sklar pitched the site to me, I have to confess I was a little bit skeptical, but it didn’t take long for me to see that she and Dan were on to something.

Look, we know that tabloid magazines lie. That’s a given. Even their most ardent fans don’t actually, deep down believe the stuff they’re reading. But there are some standards that should be kept. Standards like, I don’t know, the English language. That’s why this Gossip Cop story about OK! Magazine (they of the similarly ridiculous Jennifer Aniston pregnancy report) and their cover touting a “confirmed” pregnancy for Jessica Simpson is so insulting. The word “confirmed” kind of means something.
